The National Merit Scholarship Corporation named Johnston High School’s Carlos Fragoso a commended student as part of the 2020 National Merit Scholarship Program last month.

According to an NMSC press release, about 34,000 commended students throughout the country are being recognized for their exceptional academic promise. While the release said Fragoso will not continue in the 2020 National Merit Scholarship awards competition, commended students like him place among the top 50,000 scorers of more than 1.5 million who enter through taking the 2018 PSATs.

“Those being named commended students have demonstrated outstanding potential for academic success,” an NMSC spokesperson said via the release. “These students represent a valuable national resource; recognizing their accomplishments, as well as the key role trie schools play in their academic development, is vital to the advancement of education excellence in our nation. We hope that this recognition will help board their educational opportunities and encourage them as they continue their pursuit of academic success.”
