He nabbed criminals on the lam, discovered the missing, took drugs and guns off the street and won the hearts of all those lucky enough to scratch him behind the ear. Law enforcement gathered Monday to honor the memory of a mighty four-legged Cranston Police officer with a legendary name — Zeus.
With his handler, Cranston Police Sgt. Gregg Bruno, K-9 Zeus served the “department with great distinction, dedication and honor,” according to CPD. “He left a lasting impact on so many over the years and was responsible for the seizure of narcotics, firearms, and US currency. K-9 Zeus also successfully tracked both criminals and missing persons.”
Zeus was an ambassador to the public for the department.
“He was the star of many community demonstrations,” CPD remembered. “He will be greatly missed!”
Mourners lined the curb as the flashing motorcade carried Zeus through the streets of Cranston one last time.
“We are all heartbroken to hear about the passing of our beloved CPD K-9, Zeus,” Cranston Mayor Ken Hopkins posted online earlier this week. “My sincerest condolences go out to our entire department, and especially Sgt. Bruno, Zeus’ handler, who has not only lost his service partner but a dear friend.”
The city has lost a loyal public servant.
“A funeral procession for Zeus will take place … with a brief stop in front of Cranston Police Headquarters for a final salute,” according to Hopkins. The mayor encouraged the public to line the route and “join members of the department in front of CPD Headquarters” for one “final radio call.”
Cranston Police announced their loss earlier this week.
“It is with great sorrow we must inform you of the passing of K-9 Zeus this afternoon after he experienced a sudden illness,” Cranston Police posted on social media several days ago. “He was nine years old.”
The procession was set to start outside a Quaker Lane veterinarian in West Warwick.
“While Zeus has crossed the rainbow bridge, he will never be forgotten,” CPD wrote online. “Rest in Peace Zeus! Please keep Sergeant Bruno is your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.”
The memorial procession traveled through the city, to the Final Gift Crematory for a walk-through and final salute. According to CPD, “Sgt. Bruno and our department appreciate the many kind words and support you have provided.”
Dogs barked in the distance as the crowd fell silent to hear Zeus’ final radio call.
“K-9 Zeus, the Cranston Police Department thanks you for your service,” a dispatcher announced over the radio. “We thank you for keeping not only the citizens of Cranston, but the men and women of this department, especially your handler,” safe and secure.
Everybody knew Zeus had their back.
The low, gentle music of barking dogs continued in the background, a howling salute from across the city.
