Delmonico scholarships will support nursing and medical students

The Kelley-Gazzero VFW Post on Plainfield Pike fell silent on Sunday as Michael Delmonico grabbed the microphone. The silence was soon broken by applause as Delmonico, president of the Melissa Delmonico Scholarship Foundation named in memory of his daughter, announced that the fundraising event grossed $5,000.

“We are hoping for a net profit of around $3,500. Later this year, we’ll present our annual scholarships as well as a gift to the Animal Rescue Mission,” he said.

The scholarship program will soon be opened up to any medical or nursing student at a Rhode Island college or university. Applicants can apply at www.melissadelmonico.org.

Sunday’s steak fry was prepared and served by Ralph DeFusco, who owns Ralph’s Kitchen. His staff cooked more than 150 steaks despite the hot and humid temperatures outside. The day’s dessert came courtesy of Annette Delmonico, who made cakes for each table in memory of her late granddaughter.

Meanwhile, the Car Cruise portion of the event was a success and four people – Dave DeSantis, Jim Oliver Jr., Ronnie DeFusco and George Arakelian Jr. – took home awards for showing their respective vehicles. Arakelian Jr., who owns A Custom Car Stereo Center at 1174 Atwood Avenue, received the prestigious Melissa Delmonico Special Award for his “most outstanding contributions to the car show community and his untiring dedication to helping the scholarship foundation.”

A raffle, which featured nearly 100 prizes, also helped boost the day’s fundraising total. Along with Michael Delmonico, other family members who helped make the day a success were Annette Delmonico, his brother David Delmonico, sisters Lori and Donna Delmonico and niece and nephew Samantha and Domenic Delmonico.
