Johnston recently hosted the Rhode Island Senior Softball Championship at the Wood Lake Park field.
On Sunday, Sept. 29, a three-game series between East Providence Yacht Club and City Life Productions/Sprit of Hope went right to the last inning of the third game. The final score was 14-9, and City Life ended up with the 2024 Championship.
Glen Armitage pitched three great long games.
This is a special league started in 1982 with about 350 players from ages 50-75 years old with 20 teams. They have four divisions and are always looking for new players — especially in the 65 and over division. The teams play at all different fields around the state.
The league is run by President Donald Ardito, Vice-President Michael Hoff, Secretary Steve Thomson (the playing manager of Citylife Production/Spirit of Hope) and Treasurer Paul Danesi.

Game day brought in many players from different teams to watch the championship. Players had to play three games in a row for seven innings. This is very hard on players at this age and they all try their best. Modifications are made in the league for no more than five runs per inning, Home plate is rectangular and measures 19” x 34.5.” A strike is called every time the pitcher’s ball hits the plate.
This is so amazing to see these people play this game and how they adjust to their capabilities regarding throwing, hitting, catching and bending down for ground balls. All players have their own routines to get the job done. This game included one incident in the outfield when two players collided, but they recovered quickly and returned right back to the game.
