It is naptime at The Schoolhouse Preschool in Johnston and a gentle calm has settled over every classroom of this cheerful and inviting child care center on Central Avenue. This bustling preschool is a busy place and rest time is a welcome time of day.

The days here at The Schoolhouse are filled with projects to create, books to be heard, sensory tables to explore, letters to learn, first steps to take and friends to make. The children who attend this preschool spend their hours playing, interacting, growing and being taught and cared for in a safe and nurturing setting. The dedicated staff who work here are committed to providing the kind of environment where children feel secure, loved and enriched ~ where they can play, learn and discover, just as if they were in their own homes.

The Schoolhouse Preschool is one of several child care centers across the region that are owned by the creative and visionary team of sisters, Allison Costabile and Kristin Duffy. Those who know these sisters may also recognize their other centers: The Lighthouse in Warwick, the Gingerbread House in Cranston, and the Farmhouse, also in Johnston. They also own and operate a popular before/after school program called “Kids Club on the Pike” on Plainfield Pike which offers transportation to and from many schools in the area. Beyond these centers, they have partnerships with two additional schools in Coventry and West Greenwich.

Today, this dynamic duo has several other projects in the works including one on Post Road in Warwick which is slated to open this spring ~ the Greenhouse Preschool!

Allison and Kristin have hand-selected a close-knit staff of professionals who are patient, gentle, dependable and experienced. This could certainly be said of The Schoolhouse’s director, former preschool teacher Kennedy Vescera. It is Kennedy who keeps her eyes and ears out for the needs of not only the children under her care, but also those of her parents and teachers. She works diligently to uphold the high standards of Allison and Kristin; evidence of her efforts and shared commitment is seen every day.

Children, ages six weeks to 5 years old, will find The Schoolhouse to be a comfortable, bright and colorful place. Before Allison and Kristin opened this former child care center, they made extensive upgrades and design changes to the center. Every detail was executed with intent, from the centrally-located changing stations, to the security cameras placed discretely in every classroom to the tall, light-filled windows.

Parents also feel great comfort in the school’s unique communication App which allows them to watch their children and monitor their activities throughout the day. This school prides itself in the close and trusting relationships it builds with its parents.

The Schoolhouse Preschool is located at 350 Central Avenue, just off Atwood Avenue. It is open Monday – Friday, 7:00am to 6:00pm, all year-round. For more information, call Kennedy Vescera at 401-808-6243 or visit them at TheSchoolhousePreschoolRI.org.
