Whether it’s teaching kid’s karate, Kali or Jeet Kun Do, the Derderians -- Raffi and Susan -- have always gotten quite the kick out of martial arts.

After all, the couple owns and operates Derderian Academy of Martial Arts that’s based at 11 Commerce Way – in the Stop & Shop Supermarket Plaza – in Johnston.

Raffi Derderian, who is the head instructor of the martial arts school, has dedicated his life – as well as that of his wife Susan, to bring the physical and spiritual benefits of martial arts to the community.

Through classes geared for men and women of all ages, shapes and sizes, the Derderian’s academy has been a community of growth, growth as well as some competitions.

Saturday, though, the Derderian’s will take their skills to yet another level.

The Derderians will host a unique and important Charity Kick-A-Thon that will benefit the American Cancer Society and they’re inviting people from the Johnston community and beyond to participate.

“It’s quite the challenge,” Raffi Derderian was saying the other day inside his new state of the art and spacious facility. “Each participate will receive a free t-shirt that my wife and I are donating especially for Saturday’s event.”

Derderian also explained that students, adults and children will be required to kick a target as many times as they can for one minute during Saturday’s Kick-A-Thon that is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m.

While the event is open to anyone and Derderian said the public is encouraged to come down and watch, many of the participants will have already sought donations from friends, family, relatives and neighbors for every kick the respective participants will make that will be donated to the American Cancer Society.

“We’d also like to have people stop by and take in this event,” Derderian added. “Please, come check out what we do and also make a donation to this worth and valued organization known as the American Cancer Society.”

Among those Derderian Academy students who have been working – and collecting donations for the ACS – who will also participate in Saturday’s Kick-A-Thon are: Mason Cardosa, Kimberely Buc, Noam McNichol and Shirley Portillo.

People who’d like further information – or would like to make a donation to the ACS --- should call the Derderians at (401) 946-0384.
