Remember “Ocean’s Eleven” starring George Clooney as Danny Ocean, head of a gang of thieves who pulls off an incredible heist?
Well, Danny is dead now, but his loving sister Debbie (Sandra Bullock) who shares his genes, has just been paroled and has a plan to pull off an even bigger heist.
The movie follows the basic heist flick plot: We learn a little about Debbie and the seven women she gathers, each with a particular skill set. Then we watch as they gather the materials and information needed to pull it off. Then they pull it off. Then we see some flashbacks to see just how they pulled it off.
But wait, that’s only half the story. There are a few twists and turns to show a bigger picture, followed by the customary Where are they now? conclusion.
It’s all a lot of fun, with some interesting characters, including Kate Blanchett, Mindy Kaling, Helena Bonham Carter, Awkwafina and Rihanna. Add Anne Hathaway to the mix and you have a powerful set of women who use their skills and daring to steal a $150 million necklace at the Metropolitan Museum of Art Gala.
If you are into fashion, you’ll enjoy the glitz and glamour. If you like colorful shots of New York City, there are many to feast your eyes on. There are a multitude of cameo appearances, some of which you may miss. The credits at the end move so fast that you won’t catch them all.
Unlike “Ocean’s Eleven”, “Ocean’s 8” focuses on smart, skillful women who don’t need men to help them. The heist depends on the modern world of computer technology to carry out its mission. Some of it was a bit over my head. Joyce really got with the program and loved every minute of it.
Rated PG-13, with some profanity and a message that crime pays big time.
