Local, state officials turn out for Polisena fundraiser

Although he isn’t up for re-election in November, Johnston Mayor Joseph Polisena turned famed Luigi’s Restaurant into a “who’s who” of Rhode Island politics last week during a special fundraising reception.

U.S. Sen. Jack Reed – who Sunday had a huge turnout for his own annual fundraiser at Rhodes on the Pawtuxet – headlined a delegation included Lt. Gov. Dan McKee, Warwick Mayor Scott Avedisian, and a host of political people from all corners of the state.

Even Anthony “Nappi” Napolitano, the popular president of the Italo American Club of Rhode Island, came to pay tribute “to my long-time friend” and brought along six ranking officials from the Providence-based fraternal organization.

“Not much parking here Joe,” Napolitano mused as Polisena and his wife greeted a long-line of attendees. “Are you running for office?”

To which the mayor replied: “Got to stay on top of the game, Nappi.”

Polisena is currently in the middle of his first four-year term – and fifth overall – following changes approved by voters in 2012. The town’s mayors are now eligible to serve two, four-year terms. Polisena would next face re-election in 2018.

“It was great to see a collection of friends, political supporters, and members of the business community all come together,” Polisena said.

“I was deeply touched and shocked by the amount of people that attended, and I look forward to continue moving the town of Johnston forward, streamlining government and continuing to bring new businesses to town.”

“This is an unbelievable turnout,” said Richard J. DelFino Jr., chairman of the Johnston Democratic Town Committee. “It’s a different and relaxed mood.”

Attendees also included elected officials from several other communities and stars from the sports world, like former Providence College All-American and one-time Boston Celtics player Kevin Stacom. Former boxing champion and Cranston native Gary Balletto, who remains paralyzed after a freak accident but vows he’ll walk again, also showed up with a half-dozen friends.

Joe Acciardo, Johnston High’s head football coach, and Gary Salzillo, who owns and operates Northeast Auto Body and is one of the town’s most dedicated sports sponsors and coaches, were also present.
