Johnston's Regnault having solid season at URI

Johnston resident Kyle Regnault is yet another shining example of how the University of Rhode Island baseball Rams are winning with home-grown talent.

In his most recent outing, Regnault – who was a first team All-State selection at La Salle Academy – came on in relief of his classmate and starter Ken Graveline (Prospect, Conn.) and locked up a 6-2 win over the visiting St. Louis University Billikens.

Regnault has made seven relief pitching appearances for head coach Jim Foster’s 16-13 Rams and has combined to allow just seven hits.

“He’s such a great kid,” Jodi Pontbriand of the URI Athletic Communications Department told the Sun Rise.

To date, the 6-2, 210-pound redshirt senior who had successful Tommy John Surgery in 2009, has fanned six batters and has only allowed two extra base hits. He has not given up a triple or home run this spring.

Regnault spent his freshman and sophomore seasons at Chipola College in Marianna, Fla., where he was a member of the Dean’s List. The left-handed pitching and batting Regnault totaled a 10-2 record over 35 appearances and helped lead his team to the 2007 Panhandle Conference VII title and the NJCAA championship.

He was a first team all-conference pick in 2008 after going 6-0 with a 2.04 ERA. He also recorded 51 strikeouts with just 13 walks and held opposing hitters to a .222 batting average as a sophomore. Regnault had a 4-2 record with a 3.25 ERA in 36 innings pitched as a freshman.

At La Salle, Regnault was a member of both the baseball and wrestling teams. He compiled an 8-0 record and 0.62 ERA and landed All-State honors in his senior year. He also wrestled for the Rams.

The son of Lisa and Joseph Regnault, Kyle was born on Dec. 13, 1988. He has three brothers – Joseph, Brandon and Jared.

Joseph was a member of the wrestling team at Johnston & Wales University while Brandon currently wrestles at Rhode Island College.
