Johnston boxer not down for the count despite loss

Johnston boxer Nicky DeQuattro (3-1, 1 KO) lost a unanimous decision to Andy Aiello (1-1) of Bridgewater, Massachusetts on Friday night during a nine-fight card promoted by CES Boxing at Twin River Casino. The 4-round junior welterweight bout was at 138 lbs and all three judges scored the fight 39-37.

DeQuattro, who hails from the Silver Lake section of Providence, entered the ring to the tune of DMX’s “Let me fly” sporting green hair, wearing black trunks with green trim.

The colorful and flashy fighter felt that he didn’t have his best training camp because he wasn’t able to completely focus on the fight due to some personal issues. Because of that, DeQuattro thought the fight could have gone either way.

“I have a lot going on outside of boxing and this was the most stressful training camp outside of the actual training,” DeQuattro said. “I wasn’t able to train or rest properly, leading up to this fight.”

DeQuattro said that instead of out-boxing his opponent, he was going for the knockout blow.

“I feel I took that frustration out and instead of ‘boxing’, I was attempting to do the job one punch at a time,” DeQuattro added.

DeQuattro plans to get back in the ring before the year’s end and when he does, he is going to be a more strategic fighter.

“For the first time in my career, I stepped into the ring with only 50 percent of my head in there,” DeQuattro said. “I will not make that mistake again. Next, I will be back as a much smarter fighter and will not try to get a knockout with every punch. I know I have the skills, abilities, and the heart, so I’m not sweating the loss. It was a major lesson I needed.”

The card’s main event featured Pawtucket’s Rich Gingras (15-6-1, 9 KOs), who lost in a unanimous decision to Atlantic City’s Antowyan Aikens (13-4-1, 1 KO). It was Gingras’ first fight since 2015. It is the second time that Aikens has won in Rhode Island this year; Aikens beat Providence’s Vladine Biossein in February.
