JHS Student Council set to tackle new school year

The week of October 15-20 seems like a long way off, but four Johnston High School undergrads – Emily Raposo, Nicholas Petrillo, Ana Petrella and Caleb Lee – want to make sure that six day stretch ranks among the most memorable ever on Cherry Hill.

Those four JHS students have been elected to lead the Student Council on Cherry Hill during the 2018-19 academic year.

As history has it, the Student Council is charged with coordinating any and all plans for the annual JHS Homecoming that in recent years has been rated “the most unique and best events of its kind held at any of Rhode Island’s high schools” and this year will highlight the week above.

Raposo, who has been elected President of the Student Council, succeeds immediate past President Philip Jessop, a talented musician who will enroll at Providence College in September, with whom she worked side-by-side to coordinate the 2017 JHS Homecoming celebration.

Petrillo will serve as Vice President of the Student Council with Ana Petrella handling the Corresponding Secretary duties and Caleb Lee serving as Recording Secretary.

Homecoming is always a huge task on Cherry Hill, however, Greg Russo, a science teacher at JHS who serves as the Student Council advisor, is confident those four Panthers will put on another special event that will begin on Monday, Oct. 15 when Spirit Week makes its annual appearance replete with special theme days.

“I’m sure last year’s officers are wishing Emily and her group the best of the best for this year’s Student Council events,” said Russo. “Last year’s officers were great; however, Emily (Raposo) gained valuable experience in her time as Vice President.”

Last year’s Student Council officers were Isabella Nastasi, recording secretary; Carlos Fragoso, Corresponding Secretary; and Lauren Civetti, who will enroll at Towson State University in Pennsylvania in September, serving as the groups first-ever Public Relations Director and they all received high marks – and praise – from Russo.

Raposo, meanwhile, announced that Homecoming 2018 will be preceded by the always colorful and spirit-filled “Battle of the Classes” that’s scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 10 with a rain date of Thursday, Oct. 19.

“Homecoming week is always special here,” Russo said. “I’m already getting excited about this year’s event. It’s special when the theme is announced and the four classes here at JHS begin planning their floats.”

Although school remains in summer recess, there’s already some talk about football with Johnston hosting Mount Pleasant High’s Kilties in this year’s Homecoming Game on the artificial surface of Mayor Joseph M. Polisena Stadium on Saturday, Oct. 20.
