JCCA-Citizens Bank 5k set to step off this Sunday

If first impressions hold true, Sunday’s first ever Johnston Community Center Association-Citizens Bank 5K Road Race and Fun Walk promises to be a super success.

For starters, Citizens Bank – which has become what Mayor Joseph Polisena continues to tout as “a great corporate community partner” – has signed on as the JCCA’s sponsor that will be the first of its kind and run exclusively within the new state-of-the-art campus off Greenville Avenue.

“Without Citizens Bank’s unbelievable sponsorship, there is no 5K,” said Glenn Carroll, the JCCA’s president. “Citizens Bank has been terrific in every phase of planning and sponsorship of Sunday’s race.”

The 3.1 mile trek, which will begin and finish in front of Citizens Bank’s main campus building, is set to step off at 9 o’clock under the guidance of Racewire, a company that is steeped in the success of coordinating many such road races in Rhode Island.

“The Racewire people have been super,” Carroll said. “They’ll not only start Sunday’s race, they will be timing each and every runner.”

On Saturday, runners who have pre-registered on line with Racewire.com are invited to go to the Citizens Bank campus from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. where they can pick up their race bib and event T-shirt.

Carroll said pre-registration ends this Friday, November 2, at 1 p.m. After that, runners and walker can still register but will have to do so at Sunday’s race and then will have to pay the $25 entry fee by either check or cash.

The JCCA president also announced that those people coming to run, walk or watch must be in the complex by 7:45 a.m., as the road into the campus will be closed to traffic.

“We are really excited about this event,” Carroll said. “Sunday’s race will feature divisions for runners of every age.”

Runners who participate in the unique 5K, which will feature three loops around the Citizens Campus, will have a chance to either win cash or a medal, depending upon their place of finish.

The first Johnston male and female finisher will win a medal as will the first Citizens Bank runners in those categories.

Sunday’s 5K will also have a High School and Middle School Divisions with gold medals going to the first place runners, silver to the second place finishers and bronze to third place runners in both categories.

Likewise, the first male and female finisher in the 18 to 34 age category will win $50 in cash and a gold medal. Second and third place finishers will receive silver and bronze medals respectively. The same prizes will be awarded for runners in the 35 to 49 age division and 50 and over division, too.

Those needing more information should call Carroll at 474-8298 or JCCA Vice President Mark Gilmore at 480-9622.
