Restaurant Review

Eclectic menu with Dominican touch at Parkview Bakery Café

There’s a new restaurant at 1228 Broad St. in Providence, directly across the street from the entrance to Roger Williams Park, a few blocks from the Cranston/Providence line. The Parkview Bakery Café serves breakfast, lunch and dinner with an ethnic twist that not only attracts the largely Hispanic neighborhood, but we non-Hispanics who love their food.

Parkview Bakery Café has a large selection of mananitis (“morning” breakfasts) that incorporate plantains, Cassava, avocado, cilantro and other delicacies with their hievos (eggs), with prices ranging from $4.99 to $9.99. Bocados (Bites) include Toston Gourmet ($10.99), a whole fried mashed plantain topped with your choice of meat, or shrimp or crabmeat ($3.99 extra).Chicken wings, Fried Cassava and other appetizers range from $2.99 to $10.99.

We came for their specialty sandwiches and were not disappointed. Most are priced at $8.99, including Joyce’s Pesto Chicken and my Tripleta Borinquena, and included French fries. Joyce’s sandwich was served on toasted sourdough bread and included a grilled chicken breast, provolone cheese, pesto spread and spinach. Mine was served on a huge, fresh French roll and was packed with pulled pork, ham, steak, Swiss cheese, cabbage and tomatoes. Filling and delicious!

Ensalada (salads), quesadillas, tacos, fajitas and a gourmet Dominican style hot dog are also on the large menu. The Dominican style hot dog ($5.95) is topped with cabbage, ground beef, cheese, mayonnaise and ketchup.

The dinner menu is filled with meat and fish specialties and features daily specials. At our visit there were a number of people sampling the incredible desserts and coffees from their bakery. We were stuffed after our sandwiches but vowed to return for the sweets, including a Death by Chocolate cake.

The plan is to add a gourmet pizza section to the large restaurant.
