Easter Bunny coming to Johnston Senior Center

The Johnston Recreation Department’s annual Breakfast with the Easter Bunny will take on an entirely different look than the events of years past. Perhaps the main reason is that for the first time in its history, the JRD program will be sponsored by Citizens Bank.

“We’re really excited and honored that Citizens Bank is sponsoring this year’s Breakfast with the Easter Bunny,” said Vin Jackvony, the JRD’s program coordinator. “People will again be able to take pictures with the Eastern Bunny and each child will receive a gift as well as enjoy food and refreshments.”

Jackvony said Saturday’s long-awaited event will begin at 9:30 a.m. and continue through 11:30 and be held inside the Johnston Senior Center.

“There’s absolutely no admission charge,” Jackvony said, “but we strongly urge parents to bring a camera.”

He also noted that JRD staffers like Mike Bedrosian, who along with Gianna Mazzulla coordinates the department’s popular Sunday morning co-ed basketball clinics for kids in grades one to four, will be on hand Saturday along with Nicole Cournoyer, who also helped make last year’s event a success.

“Last year’s event was both impressive and extremely well-organized,” said Richard DelFino III, the Johnston Town Councilman who represents District 1. “I don’t think I’ve ever seen so many people at the Easter Bunny event.”

It was estimated that over 200 people went through the line to have their children’s picture taken with the Easter Bunny, and Bedrosian, as well as other JRD officials, are looking forward to surpassing that total Saturday.

“This is a great event for all the families in town,” DelFino said. “And we really appreciate Citizens Bank signing on as the sponsor.”

Clinic continues

Bedrosian, meanwhile, announced that the JRD’s Sunday morning co-ed basketball clinics will continue at the Nicholas A. Ferri Middle School Gymnasium and will be held at the still under-construction Indoor Recreation Center through June 18.

The fee is $50 per player and $25 for an additional sibling in the family. The fee includes a t-shirt and insurance as well as instructions. Those who’d like to enroll their children may do so on Sunday beginning at 10 a.m.

The program features two different sessions, one for kids in grade one and two that run from 10 to 11:15 a.m. and a second for boys and girls in grades three and four that gets underway at 11:15 a.m. and runs until 12:30 p.m.
