Bingo comes to the Senior Center

There’s a new game at the Johnston Senior Center (JSC).

Due to popular demand, the JSC has added another bingo and it comes, in part, with a special sponsor.

“We now have Monday Night Bingo,” exclaimed Marie Venditti, the JSC’s events and trips coordinator. “The people who come here for bingo are excited, we’re excited ... it’s a win-win situation for everyone.”

The JSC program, which always fills up, now lists bingo on Monday and Friday nights, beginning at 5:30 and on Thursday afternoons beginning at 1:15.

“Our Monday Night bingos will include build-ups as well as a special sponsor,” Venditti said.

Venditti explained that the Monday Night Bingo will be sponsored every other week by Concord Health Services (CHS), formerly of North Providence and now located at 30 Rolfe Square in Cranston. CHS (725-8400) provides home health services and is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The company also has people on call.

When Concord Health Services began its sponsorship Monday, Vanessa Carnevale and John Stefanik played a role in the night’s success, as they treated bingo-goers to pizza and soft beverages.

“I think Vanessa and John had as much fun as the players, maybe even more,” said Venditti. “They each called the numbers. We are both excited and grateful for Concord Health Services coming to us and offering such a sponsorship.”

Carnevale, who is Concord Health’s director of private services, and Stefanik, the director of business development, were on hand from start to finish for their inaugural sponsorship night.

Not only did Concord Health Services supply the players with pizza, Carnevale and Stefanik brought along three $25 gift certificates that made Monday night that much more special.

After meeting with JSC Assistant Director Millie Santilli about sponsorship availability, Carnevale and Stefanik, per Concord Health Services, decided upon the Monday Night Bingo.

“We had a good-size crowd Monday,” Venditti said. “The people who came and played really liked the setup; we’re expecting this to grow and grow just like the Friday Night Bingo.”

Venditti noted that Friday nights are really popular and have at times drawn more than 100 players to the JSC’s spacious multi-purpose room.

The only cost a bingo player incurs is buying the respective packages as well as their dabbers, which are used in place of the old-time bingo markers.

“The cost of playing bingo is only as much as a player wants to spend,” Venditti said. “A large package [that includes the actual playing card sheets] is $12 for 15 cards. There’s also a $9 package and they’re both available for Friday and Monday nights.”

The costs of Thursday afternoon bingos are $5, $4 and $2.

“We sell packages like Bonanza and Quickies,” Venditti said while speaking about various specials offered for all JSC bingos. “Monday and Friday nights we offer free coffee and pastry. On Thursday, the people come for lunch then play bingo.”

Anyone who’d like more information about bingo or other packages should call Venditti at 944-3343 during business hours. The JSC is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and is located at 1291 Hartford Avenue in Johnston.
