A season full of possibilities

Hard though it might be to believe, September is just around the corner – and with it the start of a new school year.

Across our communities, families are preparing students for a return to the classroom – some just before the Labor Day weekend, others right after. Administrators, teachers and staff members, meanwhile, are readying school facilities and preparing lesson plans.

Each district, and each school, faces its own challenges and opportunities in the coming year.

In the case of Warwick, classes are resuming after an intense debate over cuts that would have eliminated sports programming and led to supply and staffing reductions in other areas. Those cuts were reversed, although the district still faces a difficult fiscal position.

In Cranston, several significant building projects – including renovations at Eden Park Elementary School and upgrades to the athletic complex at Cranston High School West – have been at the forefront throughout the summer. The year ahead will be vital as the district pursues voter approval of a major bonding question in hopes of completing a multi-year project to further enhance aging facilities.

These developments, of course, do not begin to tell the full story of what unfolds in our schools each day – of amazing work being done, of young minds being nurtured, of dedicated professionals whose tireless efforts make a brighter future possible.

This year, our children will learn new skills and concepts vital to their development as adults and citizens. They will do so with the aid of tools and resources that were unimaginable just a few years ago.

Their achievements will extend far beyond the classroom, from volunteer efforts to athletic accomplishments. We count ourselves privileged to play a role in chronicling their successes.

We remember, too, that none of this would be possible without the contributions of teachers, administrators, staff members, parents, family members, volunteers, taxpayers and many others.

Summer may be nearing its end, but there is much to be excited about in the weeks and months to come. We look forward to sharing the coming year with you.
