Take a break while boating...enjoy Wickford

Posted

You’ve been making fried chicken and potato salad for boat picnics all summer. It’s definitely time to take a break from cooking, packing up and washing dishes. Visit some restaurants you can reach from your boating tie up.

The Art Festival crowds are long gone so this is the perfect time to visit Wickford Harbor, where there are several good places.

When you go through the stones of the breakwater, take a left and go by two marinas. At the head of the cove, right bordering the main street, you can tie up at the Wickford Town Dock for a couple of hours for free right in the center of town. If you opt for farther out, tie up to one of the orange labeled town moorings for a few hours also for free. These are on your left just after you come in through the wall. If you want to stay overnight, the mooring is $35.

It is a long row from there to town, but if you have an engine on your dinghy, motor in and grab a bite at the Beach Rose Café at 85 Brown St. This cozy building houses a very casual eatery for early in the day. The full kitchen specializes in fresh and organic food and serves from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. with cold sandwiches available from 4-6 p.m.. For under $10 there is a nice bowl of soup with a half sandwich, or a tuna melt panini, or burgers, served inside at tables with fun chalkboard tops, at the counter, or outside on the patio with a nice water view. If you sit outside, your dog can join you too.

For great Italian fare you could visit the charming Tate’s Italian Kitchen at 64 Brown St. It is open every day but Tuesday for breakfast as well as lunch and serves and wine with a wide selection of homemade food from chicken or eggplant parmesan, pastas, and, for under $10, there are BLT’s, turkey wraps, soup, burgers etc. For a more sophisticated dinner, visit the Tavern by the Sea right next to the little Updike Park. The Tavern has a nice deck overlooking the harbor with a nice outdoor bar, and features gourmet offerings such as duck, salmon encrusted tuna steak, lobster and scallop cardinal pasta, in addition to fish and chips and traditional American food. For under $10 there is a nice bowl of lobster bisque or chowder. They have a kids’ menu as well.

This coming Saturday is a good time to go, since there is a Music in the Park free concert from 2-4 p.m. in Updike Park on Brown Street with tunes from the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s by the Ten Rod Ramblers. Bring up lawn chairs or a blanket, grab an ice cream cone before you sit and enjoy, then do some shopping in the historic village before dinner. A lovely day, and work free!
