“Spring is almost here,” said Tony Zompa, executive director of the Johnston Senior Center (JSC). “Most of us can’t wait for warmer weather.”

The JSC leader called attention to the weather because on some occasions this winter, freezing cold temps and storms have kept attendance down at various themed events.

“But the forecast is for good weather in the coming days,” he said. “We certainly hope so; two of our most popular parties are right around the corner.”

Zompa offered a preview of the JSC’s annual St. Patrick’s Day and St. Joseph’s Day parties that will be held on March 17 and 20, respectively.

One reason for Zompa’s previews is “for our people to make their luncheon plans and know exactly what the day’s menu will be. And, we have to plan for just how many people will be here; these two parties are always well-attended and lots of fun, too.”

Those who’ll take in the Friday, March 17 St. Patrick’s Day Party will also have a chance to take home what Zompa called “big bucks” if they enter a raffle. In keeping with tradition, the JSC will raffle a colorful and well-wrapped basket for some lucky person to win and includes a number of what Zompa called “goodies as well as different lottery scratch tickets.”

“Everyone has been commenting about the basket ever since it’s been on display,” said Zompa. “People are also asking just how many lottery tickets are included in the mix. Heck, maybe we should have another raffle to have people guess just how many tickets are included”

Tickets for the raffle are priced at $2 each and will help benefit the Center’s on-going events and other offerings.

As for the St. Patrick’s Day Party, people planning to attend must call JSC Dietary Manager Brenda Martin for a reservation.

“It’s split pea soup, corned beef with mustard, seasoned boiled potatoes, a cabbage and carrot medley and lime jelly and rye bread,” Martin announced. “Please, make sure to call the Center at 944-3343 and make your reservation.”

Zompa also announced “because St. Joseph’s Day is on a Sunday (March 19) and the Center will be closed, the JSC will celebrate the always-popular Italian holiday on Monday, March 20.”

Reservations for St. Joseph’s Day are also required, especially since those always popular Zeppoles will be served for dessert.

For more information or to make reservations, call the JSC at 944-3343 Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., or stop by the Center and purchase a raffle ticket.
