Our Lady of Grace celebrates volunteers, readies for feast

There was a two-fold vintage event last Saturday evening at Our Lady of Grace Church in Johnston.

“This is a special ‘thank you’ cookout,” Donna Lussier, the parish secretary, said while enjoying grilled food near the gazebo on the church’s Festival Field. “It’s also a prelude of things to come.”

Lussier noted that upwards of 70 volunteers – all of who worked many hours to make the annual Parish Festival an overwhelming success last summer – attended the cookout and enjoyed the classic camaraderie that has become a trademark during the Rev. Peter J. Gower’s tenure.

While attendees of all ages sat at tables, Lou Mansolillo – a long-time Our Lady of Grace parishioner – served as chief chef for Saturday’s event. He even had some help from Gower during the cookout that followed the parish’s 4 p.m. Mass.

“Volunteerism has always been an essential part of Our Lady of Grace Parish, and it showed once again today,” Lussier said. “This cookout also serves as a kickoff for our feast that’s held in honor of the Madonna della Difesa.”

This year’s feast will take placed Sept. 8-11 at Festival Field, which is located adjacent to the Roman Catholic church on Lafayette Street in Johnston.

Saturday’s cookout was highlighted by Gower giving the blessing and showing his culinary skills flipping burgers.

Meanwhile, Joe Quartino – Our Lady of Grace’s man for all seasons and reasons – served as the event’s special greeter and even served food and drinks.
