Local dealership hopes to fill truck with food donations

Just in time for the holidays, Rhode Island and Southern Massachusetts Honda dealers are holding their third annual Honda Against Hunger Food & Fund Drive until December 12 to benefit area residents at risk of going hungry. Dealerships such as Johnston's own Greico Honda hope that the food drive will raise substantial quantities of food and monetary donations while also improving awareness.

“We've been so fortunate these past two years to have had success with our food drive," said Scott Birtles, president of the Rhode Island and Southern Massachusetts Honda Dealers. "Our hope this year is to once again harness the spirit of giving that thrives during the holiday season and be able to provide our neighbors with the food they need to sustain them through the difficult winter months.”

Greico Honda has positioned a Ridgeline truck inside their showroom, which will serve as a collection bin for donated food. It's the dealership's hope that the bed of the truck will be filled beyond capacity before their drive ends. Partnering again this year with the Rhode Island Community Food Bank, which works with agencies throughout the state to provide needy residents with food items, the dealers have collected 3,760 pounds of food from residents and businesses during the last two years. The Food Bank serves approximately 60,000 people each month and distributed 9.7 million pounds of food in 2015.

Those interested in donating non-perishable food items, cash or checks may do so at Grieco Honda, located at 1880 Hartford Avenue.

“It's gratifying to see our friends and fellow community members come together to support our neighbors in need,” said Birtles. “We look forward to helping the Rhode Island Community Food Bank again this year thanks to the generosity of our community.
