JHS set to expand AP offerings with new course

Johnston High School is expanding its roster of Advanced Placement (AP) courses.

Starting this fall, the school will add an additional section of AP English language and composition, which is offered to juniors. Principal Zachary Farrell said the move comes due to the steady growth of AP courses at the school over the three years since they were first instituted.

“We’re just very happy that our numbers are increasing,” he said. “It’s a testament to the ability level of our students.”

In addition to the English offerings – including English literature and composition for seniors – Johnston High presently offers juniors and seniors the opportunity to take AP classes in biology, calculus and United States history.

Last year, Johnston High students enrolled in AP courses earned a cumulative total of approximately 100 in-state college credits. That represents an average savings of approximately $300 for each student, based on the cost of in-state tuition per credit.

Farrell said for the coming school year, roughly 90 students will participate in AP classes.

“It’s a big investment, but it’s worth it,” he said. “AP programs offer high school students access to rigorous college-level curricula and the opportunity to earn college credit while in high school.”
