Gorbea to provide keynote address at NCCC’s ‘Night of the Rising Stars’

Sectretary of State Nellie Gorbea will visit the North Central Chamber of Commerce (NCCC) on Tuesday evening, May 19.

However, Gorbea’s visit won’t be anything like the pre-election social stop she made back in September inside Johnston War Memorial Park, where the NCCC hosted its annual Apple Festival.

This time, the chamber has invited Gorbea to give the keynote address during its annual awards dinner, “Night of the Rising Stars.”

“I’m excited that Nellie will be joining us,” said Deborah A. Ramos, the chamber’s executive director. “We are all excited that our secretary of state will be the featured speaker.”

Ramos said the topic of Gorbea’s remarks will be “Restarting Rhode Island: Creating opportunities through transparency, innovation and collaboration.”

“Then, the stars will come out after Nellie’s address,” she added.

Those stars will be the recipients of the chamber’s annual awards – Ambassador of the Year, the Community Service Award, the Rising Star Award, and Small Business of the Year honors. Chamber members are invited to submit their nominations for the awards, but must do so on an official ballot.

“We hope each and every chamber member will join us for this great event,” Ramos said, while announcing that this year’s dinner will be held at famed Twelve Acres Countryside Banquet Hall in Smithfield. “The night promises to be full of fun and networking.”

Ramos said the awards event will begin with the traditional cocktail hour, which she said “has always been a great time for networking.” The dinner is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.

Yet another of the evening’s highlights will be presentation of the NCCC’s annual Student Scholarships, which are given to students who attend high schools within the chamber’s footprint. Dinner tickets are $50 per person, and attendees will have a choice of beef, chicken, fish or vegetarian entrées.

The deadline for reservations is May 8, and those seeking to attend are asked to call 401-349-4674 or visit the chamber’s headquarters at 255 Greenville Ave. in Johnston to purchase tickets.

Ramos also announced that the chamber has advertising space available in the annual awards night program on a first-come, first-served basis. Chamber members can purchase business card-size ads for $30 and $20; half pages for $55 and $45; and full pages for $100 and $75.

For more information about the ads, call Ramos at the chamber’s headquarters.

The NCCC will host another event on Saturday, May 2 – the second annual Yard Sale – that will directly benefit the organization’s Scholarship Fund. The event will be held at the Anna M. McCable Elementary School, located at 100 Pleasant View Ave. in Smithfield, and will run from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

“So please, if you’re cleaning out your closets and getting into spring cleaning at the office or at home,” Ramos said, “remember that everyone’s so-called ‘trash’ could be someone else’s treasure, so why not bring those unwanted items to the Yard Sale? You’ll be helping boost our Scholarship Fund.”

Additionally, the chamber will offer a document-shredding event on May 2, also at the McCable Elementary School, from 9 a.m. to noon.
