Friends group hosting used book sale to benefit Mohr Library

Snow isn’t the only thing that’s been piling up at Johnston’s Marian J. Mohr Memorial Library.

“We’ve had lots of book donations over the last three months,” said Helen Antonizio, who serves as president of the Friends of Mohr Library. “So we’re ready to set up and sell, providing we don’t another snowstorm.”

And there are several reasons why Antonizio – and dedicated volunteers who make up the non-profit Friends group – are hoping that old man weather doesn’t interrupt this weekend’s used book sale.

First and foremost, the group’s president noted: “We’ve been able to support quite a few programs for all ages at the library over the past year, and we are able to do that mostly from the proceeds of sales like the one we’ll have this weekend.”

The Friends of Mohr Library, people like Library Director Jon Anderson and other people connected with Johnston’s only public library will tell you, is a “vital resource that recently sponsored two really great music programs as well as some popular teen programs.”

“Of course, we’ve also sponsored and supported a number of children’s programs, along with helping to support last year’s summer reading program for children, teens and adults,” Antonizio said. “So, weather permitting, we’ll be open for business this weekend with another used book sale.”

The entire event will be held on the lower level of the Mohr Library, which has won several awards for its unique design.

The two-day sale will run from noon to 6 p.m. on Friday, March 6, and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, March 7. Admission is always free.

“People will find fantastic deals both days,” Antonizio said. “There will be great selections at great prices on hard cover and paperback books … There will be fiction and non-fiction, for adults, children and young adults.”

Mystery, suspense, biography, history, arts, cooking, craft and hobby books will all be found, and prices will range from just 25 cents to $2.

“Used book sales are our major fundraisers, with proceeds supporting library programs and events,” Antonizio said. “And that also includes the Friends purchasing museum and zoo passes, concerts, and summer reading for all ages.”

This weekend’s two-day event will include a unique raffle for a special Mother’s Day Gift Basket. Tickets will be priced at $1 each or a book of six for just $5.

“The basket will be filled with natural soaps and lotions for anyone in the family,” Antonizio said. “Proceeds from the raffle will go to the Andrew Green Memorial Fund, which helps to support the Children’s Summer Reading Program along with children and teen events throughout the year.”

Antonizio also announced that “we welcome new members who are willing to support either through donations, membership dues or through volunteering their time for the betterment of the town’s only public library.”
