WCA 10’s win District 3

Posted

The Warwick Continental American 10-year-old All-Star team remained unbeaten and rolled to a 15-8 win over Chariho in the District III championship on Sunday afternoon.

The WCA offense surged in the title game as it had throughout the entire district bracket. Landon Engstrom and Lou Johnston paced the offense with four RBI each while Max Garcia also drove in three runs. Teddy Mackowitz added two runs while Joey Rotz drove in another.

Engstrom threw four innings of work on the mound for WCA and finished with eight strikeouts while only allowing two earned runs. Brantley Hinshaw threw a scoreless inning of relief while Dexter Fernandes recorded a strikeout in another inning of work.

“Their goal was to win out in districts their first year as All-Stars. To be the team in our league to make it to states, it’s a talented group of kids,” said WCA 10’s manager Seth Holbrook.

The team’s success and productivity was thanks to doing more than just pitching and hitting.

“We’ve had strong pitching and when we hit the ball, we run the bases like crazy. The boys are pretty smart baseball players, they have great IQ and they know to take the extra base when they can get it. Our offense is running pretty well, but it’s the aggressive base running,” Holbrook said.

Next up for the team will be the state tournament which starts on Saturday.

“The pitching is going to be tougher and the hitting is going to be better. It’s going to be about the ability to dial in and focus. That has to be there,” said Holbrook.

Members of the WCA 10’s included: Brantley Hinshaw, Cody Banach, Dexter Fernandes, Hunter Holbrook, James Armstrong, Joey Rotz, Landon Engstrom, Lou Johnston, Max Garcia, Nico Gianfrancesco, Teddy Mackowitz, Teddy Brightman. Coaches were Seth Holbrook, Jim Garcia and Marc Engstrom.

The WCA 12’s fell in the District 3 championship to North Kingstown/Wickford. NKW took home a 5-2 win in the “if” game on Monday evening.

Dilan M tossed 3 2/3 innings on the mound and racked up seven strikeouts while allowing just one run. Jimmy Louth drove in an RBI in the loss.

The two teams were scoreless through six innings on Sunday, but NKW would get a walk-off grand slam in the bottom of the eighth to force the second game. Colby Fales pitched five innings for WCA and allowed no hits while striking out 12 batters.
