PAL rolling along in playoff race

The Warwick PAL Connie Mack baseball team is off to a strong start this summer and is eyeing a big run in the second half of its regular season.

PAL sat at 6-3 as of Tuesday, tied in the standings with division rival Flood Ford and trailing West Warwick by just one point as it boasts a record of 6-2-1.

PAL is made up primarily of Pilgrim and Toll Gate players and this year’s roster has a healthy balance of kids old and new. PAL’s calling card to this point has been strong pitching, fielding to go along with timely hitting. However, PAL’s bats have been improving in recent games, including a 13-6 win over East Greenwich last week in a statement win on the road.

Austin Wheeler and Cayden Landy drove in a combined five runs on a combined five hits in the win over EG, while Connor Farrell and Jayden Gonzalez also has multi-hit performances. Jack Colvin got the win on the mound.

“We’ve got some guys coming back, some new guys. We have some younger kids and some older kids too. We’ve been getting really good pitching, the defense has been good and the last few games we’ve started to hit. Pitching and defense was solid and now the bats are coming around,” said PAL manager Ed Colvin.

Other standouts to this point have been pitcher Anthony DeLuca, outfielder Jack Cirelli, as well as recent Toll Gate grads Dylan Perreault and Gonzalez.

Although all teams qualify for the postseason, seeding will be important when it comes to scheduling and home field advantage. PAL has some ground to make up with six games left on the schedule, but Ed Colvin is optimistic that his club has what it takes to leap frog the few teams in front and possibly wrap up the No. 1 seed heading into the playoffs.

“I think that we can compete for first place in our division. With our pitching being so solid with DeLuca, Jack Colvin, Brayden Ogden, those guys are our top guys and Austin Wheeler is hitting over .500 at the top of the order … we’re getting some hitting atop the lineup. We have a chance to win our division,” Ed Colvin said. “It’s summer ball, guys are coming and going, but we have some really good guys coming.”

PAL most recently took on West Warwick and fell 5-3. Jack Colvin struck out six batters and allowed two earned runs. Wheeler and Chris Reid each had multiple hits.
