Around 2:26 p.m., July 25, Warwick Police were completing a traffic stop as part of a National Highway Safety Transportation Administration Speed Enforcement Detail near the intersection of Post Road and Post Extension Road.

Officers spotted a blue sedan pass the location traveling south “at what appeared to be an extreme high rate of speed,” according to the arrest report.

Police utilized an “LTI Ultralyte Laser Speed Detection Instrument” and confirmed the vehicle was traveling at 75 miles per hour in a clearly marked 35 mph zone.

Police “attempted to catch up to the suspect vehicle.”

“Upon reaching the Apponaug rotary I was able to get behind the suspect vehicle, which was now behind a vehicle and unable to enter the rotary,” wrote Warwick Police Officer Kevin P. Grant Jr.

Grant noted that the driver “appeared to tense his body up.” The driver then allegedly attempted to pass the vehicle, cutting off a pick-up truck in the rotary. Police initiated a traffic stop.

The vehicle sped off, along Veterans Memorial Drive, and the driver eventually lost control, striking a curb in front of Gordon’s Pond. Eventually, they stopped the car in front of a dentist’s office on Veterans Memorial Drive.

The driver was ordered out the car. Police identified the driver as Jeffrey J. Dorsey, 35, of 23 Patton St., Coventry. According to the arrest report, Dorsey smiled at police and refused to comply with orders.

Dorsey eventually exited the car and put his hands behind his back. He was ordered out of the roadway. He refused to answer questions. Police say they detected the smell of alcohol. Police asked Dorsey to consent to a series of standardized field sobriety tests. He declined.

“Police moved the vehicle into a nearby parking lot. They arrested Dorsey under suspicion of driving under the influence. Dorsey was charged with DUI (BAC unknown), Speeding (11+ in excess of posted speed limit), Failure to Maintain Proper Control of Motor Vehicle, Turn Signal Required, Failure to Yield Right of Way to Emergency Vehicles,  and Refusal to Submit to Chemical Test.
