WARWICK SHOWCASE

BEAST
* * ½
Man Fights Bear

There are no computer-generated bears hurt in this movie.

Idris Elba ends up with a few scratches and others get wounded and killed in this tense, violent movie.

Elba plays Dr. Nate Samuels, who takes his two teenage daughters to Africa where he met his recently deceased wife.

They stay at the reserve of an old friend who shows them around the area, where lions, elephants, giraffes and other animals are spotted in the wild.

Poachers killed off a pride of lions, but one escaped and he is pretty darned mad, seeking revenge from anyone who gets in his way.

Unfortunately the Samuels and their host are in the wrong place at the wrong time.

“Get in the jeep” and “Stay in the jeep” are heard frequently by the doctor as the lion crashes into the vehicle and chases after their friend who is seriously wounded.

It all comes down to the battle between human and lion.

Guess who wins!

Elba is as good as ever, but the hour and a half movie doesn’t have enough going for it to stretch it even that long.

Rated R because of the tension and violence. Young children might be frightened.

NETFLIX

CARTER

This Korean action flick is the ultimate in the genre.

There is conflict between North and South Korea and the USA is involved.

A man has been given a serum that causes him to lose his memory. A listening device is put in his ear, and he is given instructions to follow if he ever wants to get his memory and family back.

Forget about the plot. It makes little sense.

This one is just for the ultimate action genre crowd. Carter kills hundreds (literally) of bad guys as he saves a young girl who is being sought by who knows.

Chases include motorcycles, trains, trucks, helicopters and airplanes. The action scenes are often fuzzy and quick-shots. Hundreds of stunt men are used. One scene has Carter, the young girl; and an enemy hurling through the sky with one parachute.

The movie is completely out of control.
