DRUG POSSESSION & DUI

Around 8:30 p.m., July 19, Johnston Police Patrolman Thomas Santurri responded to the vicinity of 1300 Atwood Ave. for the report of a single vehicle crash. Dispatch personnel told responding officers that the driver may be unconscious behind the wheel.

Police found a blue Lexus disabled in the right lane of Atwood Avenue facing northbound. The driver’s side front tire was damaged.

Police located the driver who was pacing around her vehicle. According to police, she “spoke extremely fast” and “her movements were also quicky (sic) and jerky.”

Police identified the driver as Adriana Bozzi, 36, of 240 Orchard St., Cranston. She told police that she was traveling north on Atwood in the right lane when another vehicle traveling south “swerved” at her. When she attempted to avoid the other vehicle, she swerved into the southbound lanes of travel and struck the curb, according to the driver.

“It should be noted that Ms. Bozzi had difficulty explaining what transpired or what direction she was traveling,” Santurri wrote in the arrest report. “It should be noted that Ms. Bozzi was profusely sweating, although it was approximately 68 degrees.”

Bozzi was wearing “a T-shirt and leggings” and her pupils were “possibly larger than the normal ranges for the lighting conditions.”

Santurri conducted an inventory search of the vehicle. He located Bozzi’s wallet, “which had numerous straws and a white powdery substance in one of the compartments.”

“Based on my training and experience I recognized this to be consistent with narcotic use,” Santurri wrote.

Police say they also found a “small plastic bag with white powdery substance” in the rear seat compartment.

He asked Bozzi to consent to a series of standardized field sobriety tests. She agreed. Following the tests, Bozzi was arrested for suspicion of DUI-Drugs/Alcohol (first offense, blood alcohol content unknown, a misdemeanor) and Possession of Schedule I-V (more than 10 grams, a felony).

Bozzi was transported to Johnston Police Headquarters where police say she refused a chemical breath test. Bozzi was also cited for Refusal to Submit to a Chemical Test, but did consent to a Drug Recognition Expert evaluation.

Bozzi was arraigned by Justice of the Peace Daniel Connors later that night and released on $5,000 personal recognizance bail.
