FATAL HIT & RUN

Two pedestrians were struck down by vehicles within minutes on Quaker Lane in Warwick Sunday night.

A 44-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene and a 26-year-old woman was transported to the hospital with serious injuries following the fatal hit and run.

Police said a woman hit a male pedestrian, stopped to check on his condition and was run down by another passing vehicle. Police were still searching for the second vehicle Monday morning.

Police identified the man who was killed as Nicholas Cote, 44, of Warwick. Cote was pronounced “deceased at the scene,” according to police. Police said Cote “was on foot, in the right, south bound lane.”

Police also identified the first motorist, the one who stopped and was hit by an unidentified vehicle, as Logan Barboza, 26, of West Warwick. Barboza was transported to “Rhode Island Hospital with serious bodily injuries,” according to Warwick Police.

“Upon getting out to check his condition, a dark-colored SUV, described as a Jeep Grand Cherokee, struck Barboza causing serious bodily injury, and ran over Cote resulting in fatal injury,” according to Warwick Police. “The Jeep then continued south bound on Quaker Lane without stopping.”

Police are searching for the vehicle that fled the scene.

Warwick Police Capt. Charles A. Boisseau, of the Community Services Division, provided a press release, with a few details from the deadly incident outside 709 Quaker Lane in Warwick.

Around 9:39 p.m., Sunday, July 28, Warwick Police officers were dispatched to the area of 709 Quaker Lane for the report of a motor vehicle crash involving a pedestrian.

Upon arrival, police “found two victims in the Route 2 South bound lane of travel,” according to the press release. Police said the man “was pronounced deceased at the scene” and the woman “was transported to Rhode Island Hospital with serious bodily injuries.”

“A witness remained on scene and provided a written statement to investigating officers,” according to police. “Initial findings indicate that the female had been traveling south on Quaker Lane when her vehicle struck a pedestrian in the right, south bound lane. Upon getting out to check on his condition, a dark colored SUV, described as a Jeep Grand Cherokee, struck the female causing serious bodily injury, and ran over the pedestrian resulting in fatal injury. The Jeep then continued south bound on Quaker Lane without stopping.”

The Warwick Police Traffic Units’ Accident Reconstruction Team will be leading the investigation and police plan to pursue criminal charges.

TRUCK vs MOTOR SCOOTER

A pick-up truck collided with a motor scooter at 3:44 p.m. on Sunday, July 28.

Warwick Police issued a press release following the crash at Main Avenue and Sharon Street in Warwick.

Warwick Police officers were dispatched to the intersection after receiving reports from the scene. Officers found a 36-year-old man, the scooter operator, “on the ground in the area of 854 Main Ave. with serious bodily injury,” according to police. “Warwick EMS personnel arrived on scene, stabilized, and transported the male to Rhode Island Hospital.”

The operator of the truck, a 42-year-old Warwick man, is cooperating with police and remained on the scene of the crash. Police did not identify the driver or the scooter operator.

“The initial investigation shows that the pick-up truck was travelling east bound on Main (Avenue) approaching Sharon (Street) when the scooter, which was traveling west bound on Main (Avenue), attempted to make a left turn onto Sharon (Street) from the Main (Avenue) westbound left turn lane,” according to police. “The cause of the accident is still under investigation, however, it does not appear speed was a factor. The scooter operator was not wearing a helmet.”

The Warwick Police Department Traffic Units’ Accident Reconstruction Team responded to the crash and is leading the investigation. SHOPLIFTING

Around 6:22 p.m., June 20, Warwick Police responded to Target at 400 Bald Hill Road for a shoplifting in progress report.

A man was spotted entering the store with paper Target bags folded in the child seat of the shopping cart, according to the arrest report. According to store security, the man filled the bags with store merchandise and then attempted to leave the store.

Police identified the man as Clovis Patrick Stewart, 45, of 212 Stacy St., North Garland, Arizona.

Stewart allegedly tried to leave without paying and was stopped by store security. According to the arrest report, he shoved his phone in the face of the store’s loss prevention officer, claiming to have a receipt. Police said he “became belligerent” and eventually “dropped the bags and left the store.”

Store security gave police a still image of the blue, extended cab Ford truck in which Stewart allegedly fled the scene. Police say they canvassed the area and found the truck at the extended-stay hotel on West Natick Road. The truck engine was still warm.

Police entered the lobby and saw a man who matched the suspect’s description. They arrested Stewart and charged him with Shoplifting (first offense).

RECKLESS DRIVING

Around 12:55 p.m., Sunday, June 23, Warwick Police Detective Ryan M. McGarry was driving an unmarked detective unit on East Avenue near Bald Hill Road when he stopped at a traffic light.

“While stopped at the red light on East Avenue waiting to travel eastbound through Bald Hill Road, I observed the light turn green, then immediately heard a car’s horn activate and sustain for approximately ten seconds,” McGarry wrote in the arrest report. “While I tried to determine which vehicle had their horn activated, traffic began to move through the intersection.”

He spotted a man on a motorcycle, followed by a silver SUV that allegedly weaved through traffic at a high rate of speed to catch up to the bike.

“Both operators appeared to exchange words, then the SUV swerved at the motorcyclist twice, nearly causing a crash,” McGarry wrote. “Both vehicles came to a stop in traffic near the entrance to the At Home store. At that point the operator of the SUV shifted into reverse and attempted to crash into the motorcyclist who dismounted his bike in order to retreat.”

McGarry initiated a traffic stop of the SUV and identified the driver as William S. Kingsford, 54, of 2150 Scituate Ave., Scituate.

The motorcycle fled east on East Avenue and McGarry was unable to read its plate. The driver allegedly apologized after exiting the vehicle and sitting on the curb. More police were called to the scene.

Kingsford was charged with one count of Reckless Driving and a count of Driving with a Suspended License (second offense). He was released with a Third District Court summons.

DUI

Around 9:45 p.m., July 1, Warwick Police were dispatched to West Shore Road following reports of an erratic driver headed west toward Taco Bell at 2574 West Shore Road.

Police located the vehicle and initiated a traffic stop. They identified the driver as Jose Lux Lopez, 25, of 50 Knight St., Cranston.

Lopez allegedly had “moderately bloodshot eyes,” according to police.

He was asked to consent to a series of standardized field sobriety tests. Following the tests, Lopez was arrested and charged with DUI (BAC unknown; first offense). He was transported to Warwick Police Headquarters where he refused to take a chemical breath test; he was also cited for Refusal to Submit to a Chemical Test, Laned Roadway violations, and Driving Without/Expired License (first offense).

Later that day, Lopez was arraigned by a bail commissioner and released to a sober adult.

RECKLESS DRIVING

Around 5:35 p.m., July 29, Cranston Police arrested Thomas Marold, 35, of 50 Shore Ave., Warwick, for one count of Reckless Driving/Eluding Police (first offense). The arrest was the result of a previously issued Arrest & Affidavit Warrant, and subsequent arrest by Warwick Police. Marold was arraigned by a Justice of the Peace and transported to ACI Intake as a “Probation Violator,” according to Cranston Police.
