DUI

Around 8:19 p.m., May 16, Warwick Police officers were dispatched to a three-car crash on Centerville Road. Warwick Fire Department personnel were already on the scene. They informed police there were no injuries.

Police identified one of the drivers as Michael W. Winsor, 62, of 19 Shannock Hill Road, Carolina (a village that straddles the border of Charlestown and Richmond), RI. He told police he was driving to the Auto Zone in Warwick to return parts he had purchased for his vehicle.

“I observed Winsor to have mild bloodshot watery eyes and an overwhelming odor of an alcoholic beverage emanating from his breath,” Warwick Police Officer Zachary I. Monaghan wrote in the arrest report. “When asked to explain the events leading up to the accident, Winsor was having a difficult time explaining his actions. I observed Winsor’s speech to be slurred and slow, he had to explain and (re-word) everything he said multiple times.”

Police searched Winsor’s vehicle and say they found an open beer — a “Natty Daddy” — in his cup holder, partially covered by a pair of gloves.

Police asked Winsor to consent to a series of standardized field sobriety tests. He consented.

Following the tests, Winsor was informed that he was under arrest for the suspicion of DUI. He was read his rights and transported to the Warwick Police Department.

“Winsor was then offered the opportunity to consent to a test of breath, to which he refused,” Monaghan wrote.

Winsor was charged with DUI of liquor (BAC unknown; first offense). He was also cited for Refusal to Submit to Chemical Test (first offense), Driving with Expired License or Without License (third offense), Interval Between Vehicles (Following Too Close), Presence of Alcoholic Beverages (Operating/Riding in a Motor Vehicle), No Insurance (first offense) and Display of Registration Plates.

SHOPLIFTING & CONSPIRACY

At 12:38 p.m., June 17, Cranston Police Officers arrested Jocelyn Barrows, 26, of 34 Diamond Hill Road, Burrillville, for two counts of felony Shoplifting and two counts of Conspiracy, as well as a misdemeanor Shoplifting charge. Warwick Police turned over custody of Barrows following her arrest on an active warrant. According to Cranston Police, Barrows was awaiting arraignment.

DUI

At 3:44 a.m., June 16, Cranston Police Officers arrested John Curran, 31, of 334 Knights St, Apt. 1113, Warwick, for Driving Under the Influence (BAC unknown), and cited for refusing a chemical breath test. According to Cranston Police, the arrest was the result of a suspicious auto report on Pontiac Avenue. Curran was awaiting arraignment, according to Cranston Police.

DOMESTIC SIMPLE ASSAULT

At 11:07 p.m., June 13, Cranston Police Officers arrested James Cote, 35, of 14 Lane One, Warwick, for Domestic Simple Assault, Domestic Disorderly Conduct and a 3rd District Court Bench Warrant as a result of a domestic disturbance at 52 Dennis Ave., Apt. 3. Cote was arraigned by a Justice of the Peace and transported to Men’s Intake at the ACI, according to Cranston Police.

DUI

Johnston police arrested a Johnston contractor who said he drank at a work site in Warwick.

Around 3 p.m., May 31, Johnston Police responded to 46 Putnam Ave., for the report of a motor vehicle crash. The driver of one of the involved vehicles told police that she was slowing down in westbound traffic when she was “suddenly struck from behind” by a second vehicle.

A passing pedestrian witnessed the crash and told police that the rear-ending vehicle had actually been traveling north on George Waterman Road when he veered off to the right side of the road, leaving the lane of travel, running into the Route 44 sign, breaking it in half. The driver then allegedly fled that scene, onto Putnam Avenue, when he struck the other car “from behind at a high rate of speed.”

Another witness on the scene backed up that version of events.

Police identified the other driver as Carl M. Johnson, 72, of 18 Salina Ave., Johnston.

Johnston allegedly told police that he had “one beer” during lunch time. Police noted a “strong smell of alcoholic beverage coming from his breath and (he) had bloodshot watery eyes.” The driver, a contractor, also told police that he was coming from a job site in Warwick.

His face was “red in color” and he was allegedly slurring while speaking to police. Eventually, he told police he had a “couple beers.”

Police logged “multiple containers of alcohol” into evidence.

Police asked Johnson to consent to a series of standardized field sobriety tests. He consented.

Following the tests, Carl was arrested and charged with DUI of Liquor or Drugs (first offense). He also received citations for Intervals Between Vehicles-Following Too Close, Laned Roadway Violation, Duty in Accident Resulting In Damage to Highway Fixtures, and Operating Vehicle with Unsealed Alcoholic Beverage.
