The Johnston Little League senior team recently took home the District 1 Championship when it defeated Cranston East in back-to-back games.
Johnston picked up a 10-3 win in Game 1.
Dylan Guernon pitched five innings for Johnston to pick up the win. Armani Arias and Yanni Fotopoulos pitched in relief and combined for a scoreless two innings of work.
Johnston held a slim 5-3 heading into the seventh inning but would explode for five runs to run away with the 10-3 victory. Steve Finegan, Guernon, Matt Clements and Arias led the way offensive in the top of the seventh.
Johnston then took Game 2 by a score 3-2 to win the district title.
Chris Civetti led Johnston on the mound, pitching a complete game.
Johnston was able to escape a jam in the fourth inning when the bases were loaded with just one out. Logan Martin would field a hard hit ground ball at second base, tag the runner and complete the double play to first base to end the threat and maintain the Johnston lead.
“I’m fortunate to have a group of young men who exemplify the term “teamwork”. They don’t look at individual stats, they look at team stats. With these players and my two coaches, Eric Martins and Bob Civetti, it’s been a good ride and we’re not done yet,” said Johnston seniors coach Gary Rianna.
Johnston would take on the District 5 winner on Tuesday night in Exeter, but the results were not available at press time.
