To the Editor,

My name is Alexis Forsberg, and I am 11 years old. I am writing to share my thoughts and point of view about something very important that is happening in our forests and environment. Have you ever heard of Beech Leaf Disease? It can be extremely scary, since it affects our Beech trees, which play a big role in our environment. Beech Leaf Disease is caused by tiny worms which are called nematodes. These microscopic worms attack the leaves of Beech trees. They cause the tree leaves to look shriveled and sick. If the disease reaches a point where the tree gets really sick, it can eventually die. This is very sad and upsetting because Beech trees provide homes for many animals. Not only that, but they are extremely beautiful. These trees also provide shade and keep our air clean. I believe that it is important for everyone in our community to know about Beech Leaf Disease. If more people can understand what is happening, we can all work together to try and protect our trees.

One way we can protect the trees is by not moving firwood from place to place, because that can spread the disease.  We can also support local efforts to study and stop the disease.

I hope our community can come together to save our beautiful Beech trees. They are a big part of what makes our town special, and we need to do everything we can to protect them.
