Bob the Builder comes to Providence

I think I'm the only one in Rhode Island who didn't know who Bob the Builder was.

Talking to HIT Entertainment's Communications Executive Denielle Webb, I learned that "Bob the Builder has become one of the biggest stars of any stage around the globe." The popular children's TV show can be seen locally on two PBS channels: Channel 2 in Boston and Channel 36 in Providence.

"While our primary demographic is boys ages three to six, Bob is also quite popular with young girls who can identify with some of the characters," Webb said. "And the parents love the show and the positive messages about teamwork and saving the environment."

I checked out a half dozen people with young children and grandchildren, and every one of them knew and loved the cartoon characters.

"I sit and watch it with my grandchildren," my friend Jack told me. "They know the theme song and sing along with it."

The show started in the UK 10 years ago and shortly after made its debut in the United States. The kids love the live version and identify with the characters.

"It's all about building," Webb said. "The show coming to Providence on January 11 [Bob the Builder Live! Spud's Big Mess], our first touring show in five years, is all about building a wind farm and recycling center," Webb said.

"For many children, this is their first theatre experience. There's singing and dancing, and lots of interaction with the audience," she added.

I was curious about Bob, so at Webb's suggestion I went on their Web site, www.bobthebuilder.com. Bob's a big deal, with DVD's, games, books, clothing and all kinds of merchandise. Their U.S. tour is listed, and it is very ambitious. In January alone they are visiting over eight states, including Rhode Island, and will cover over 70 cities before the tour ends.

"These characters are very real to the children and provide great role models," Webb said. "You're coming to the show, aren't you?"

I honestly hadn't planned to, but after talking with Denielle Webb and checking out the Web site, I feel that I've really missed something.

"Bob the Builder Live! Spud's Big Mess" will be at the Providence Performing Arts Center on Sunday, Jan. 11 for two shows at 2 and 5:30 p.m. For tickets, ranging from $15-$35 call 421-ARTS or visit the PPAC box office.
