DUI

Shortly before 8:30 p.m. on Oct. 27, Officer Steven Moretti was conducting a patrol on Knight Street when a 2011 Toyota Camry “exited Miner Street onto Knight Street, nearly hitting my vehicle.”

“I had to stop short in order to avoid a collision,” the officer reports.

Moretti followed the vehicle as it continued on Knight Street. “I took a position behind the suspect vehicle and activated my overhead emergency lights to conduct a traffic stop,” he reports. “The suspect vehicle then took a right turn into the parking lot of the Pontiac Mills Apartments complex, failing to use a directional.”

The vehicle stopped in front of the apartments and Moretti made contact with the operator, who was reportedly “slurring his speech and fumbling over his words.” The operator is said to have acknowledged consuming alcohol earlier that day and agreed to undergo field sobriety testing, which he reportedly failed.

Christopher R. Burley, 36, Taunton, Massachusetts, was arrested for suspicion of driving under the influence and transported to Warwick Police headquarters for processing. While at headquarters, he is said to have refused a chemical breath test.

Burley was later released into the custody of a family member with a summons to appear in Third Division District Court on a charge of driving under the influence. He was also cited for refusal to submit to a chemical test, entering from a private road or driveway, and turn signal required.

Shortly before 1:30 a.m. on Oct. 31, officers Keara Enos and Nathaniel Gray responded to the area of Main Avenue and Warwick Industrial Drive for a report of a motor vehicle accident. Dispatch advised a vehicle had driven off the road and was stuck in a ditch.

At the scene, the officers observed a 2012 Toyota Prius “tilted downward at an angle, with its front-end facing the bottom of a steep ditch beside the road at the intersection.” A man was observed near the driver’s side door and a woman was next to the passenger-side door.

The reporting party, who had witnessed the crash and was still at the scene, told police the man had been driving the vehicle when it went into the ditch. She also indicated to police that she believed the man was intoxicated.

Enos then made contact with the man and woman who had been in the vehicle. As she spoke with the man, she “detected the odor of alcohol emanating from his breath.”

“I noticed that his speech appeared slightly slurred, and I noticed his manner of speaking appeared somewhat disjointed,” the officer reports.

The man is said to have acknowledged consuming alcohol earlier that night and agreed to undergo field sobriety testing, which he reportedly failed.

William P. Westgroves, 50, Worcester, Massachusetts, was arrested for suspicion of driving under the influence and transported to Warwick Police headquarters for processing. While at headquarters, he is said to have refused a chemical breath test.

Westgroves was issued a summons to appear in Third Division District Court on a charge of driving under the influence. He was also cited for refusal to submit to a chemical test and failure to maintain proper control of vehicle.

DRUG CHARGES

Just after 3:30 a.m. on Oct. 28, Officer Connor Bemis was traveling in the area of Toll Gate Road and Providence Street when he observed a Kia with Florida registration traveling at a high rate of speed. The officer clocked the vehicle at approximately 42 mph in a 25 mph zone.

“Upon approaching the intersection of Toll Gate Road and Bald Hill Road, I observed the vehicle to suddenly swerve from its lane of travel into the left turn lane, with no turn signal activated,” the officer reports.

Bemis initiated a stop and made contact with the operator, who is said to have acknowledged being in possession of marijuana without a medical usage card. The officer reports that an ash tray in the vehicle’s cup holder “appeared to be holding discarded marijuana cigarettes.”

Bemis reports he then conducted a “probable cause” search of the vehicle, discovering a “glassine plastic baggie containing a white powdery substance” that he suspected to be cocaine. He then reportedly found other suspected drugs and drug paraphernalia, including a pill bottle containing marijuana, a crack pipe, and pill bottles containing clonazepam, amphetamine and dextroamphetamine, all controlled substances.

Amanda L. Parrillo, 36, 119 Gervais St., Coventry, was arrested on three counts of possession of a controlled substance and transported to Warwick Police headquarters for processing.

According to Bemis, subsequent testing confirmed the substances found during the course of the search as 0.2 grams of cocaine, 0.5 grams of clonazepam, 0.7 grams of amphetamine and 4.5 grams of marijuana.

Parrillo was held pending a morning court appearance. She was also cited for speeding, laned roadway violations, and possession of marijuana, one ounce or less, second offense.

DISORDERLY CONDUCT

Just before 7 p.m. on Oct. 28, officers Michael Bailey and Steven Moretti responded to the Extended Stay America at 245 West Natick Road at the request of staff to eject a guest at the hotel. Dispatch advised the guest “had been asked multiple times to lower his music and refused” and had been involved in an argument with a front desk employee.

At the scene, the reporting party – an employee at the hotel – told officers that “multiple guests” had come to the front desk to complain about loud music coming from one of the rooms. The employee said she went to that room to speak with the guest, who was “immediately disrespectful” and refused a request to turn down his music. The employee then called a manager, who advised that police should be contacted and requested a no-trespassing order for the guest.

Officers then made contact with the guest in question, who is said to have repeatedly refused requests to leave. He “continued to yell, swear, and disregard officers’ request to leave the premises,” Bailey reports, and was then placed under arrest.

Trapper Fleming, 38, Lynchburg, South Carolina, was charged with disorderly conduct and transported to Warwick Police headquarters for processing. He was later released with a summons to appear in Third Division District Court.

SHOPLIFTING

Shortly before 10:30 a.m. on Oct. 26, officers Jordan Guyton and Stanley Hermanowski responded to the Walmart at 650 Bald Hill Road for a report of shoplifting. Dispatch advised that a male suspect was in the custody of loss prevention personnel.

At the scene, police met with a loss prevention officer who indicated the suspect had been observed “acting suspiciously” in the store’s electronics section. The suspect was reportedly seen selecting a pair of headphones, a portable charger and a wall charger – items with a combined value of more than $105 – and concealing them on his person before exiting the store without making any attempt to pay. At that point, the suspect was met by store employees.

Justin A. Iaciofano, 35, 1050 Main St., West Warwick, was arrested on a charge of shoplifting and transported to Warwick Police headquarters for processing.

SUSPENDED LICENSE

Just after 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 26, Officer Sara Goes was traveling south on Warwick Avenue when she observed a 2000 Cadillac Escalade with an expired registration sticker on its rear license plate. A subsequent check of the plate found it was associated with a 1986 Nissan and had been canceled.

Goes initiated a stop and made contact with the Escalade’s operator, who was found through a records check to have a suspended license and at least two prior convictions for driving with a suspended license. The operator was also wanted on an active bench warrant issued from Third Division District Court.

Jason S. Brayman, 41, 22 Pond View Drive, Coventry, was taken into custody on the warrant and charged with driving with a suspended license, third or subsequent offense. He was transported to Warwick Police headquarters for processing and later transported to the Adult Correctional Institutions. He was also cited of operating an unregistered vehicle.

WARRANTS

At approximately 2:14 p.m. on Oct. 25, Officer Zachary Black was conducting a patrol on Bald Hill Road when he observed the operator of a 2004 Ford Taurus not wearing a seat belt.

“Checks of the vehicle’s rear registration plate revealed that it did not match the vehicle that it was displayed on,” the officer reports. “I also observed the front windshield to be cracked.”

Black initiated a stop and made contact with the vehicle’s operator and passenger. A check of the vehicle’s VIN number found its registration had been canceled. The passenger, meanwhile, was found to be wanted on three active bench warrants issued from Third Division District Court.

Nicole J. Andrade, 35, 95 Hamilton St., West Warwick, was taken into custody on the warrants and transported to Warwick Police headquarters for processing. She was later transported to the Adult Correctional Institutions.

The operator of the Taurus was cited for operating a vehicle with canceled registration and not wearing a seat belt

Costa reports that a records check revealed the vehicle’s registration was suspended. Additionally, its registered owner was wanted on an active arrest warrant issued from Cranston Police.

Costa initiated a stop in the area of Commonwealth Avenue and Toll Gate Road. He made contact with the vehicle’s operator, who was confirmed to be its registered owner.

Richard D. Lara, 30, 63 Goddard St., Apt. 2, Providence, was taken into custody on the warrant and transported to Warwick Police headquarters for processing. He was later transferred into the custody of Cranston Police. He was also cited for operating a motor vehicle with suspended registration.
