Tree Post reaches Final Four of Legion playoffs

The Warwick Tree Post baseball team is battling in the American Legion playoffs and reached the Final Four after going 3-1 in the opening games.

After winning the first round by sweeping Howard Rogers, Warwick dropped an 8-5 decision to South Kingstown. The team them fell behind 2-0 in the first inning of the following game against Scituate, but would come alive by scoring seven runs in the second and running away with the 11-2 win to remain in the hunt.

“It’s big, it keeps us going in the playoffs. It’s nice to see the bounce back from the team. We got great pitching, we got great offense, you can’t ask for much more than that,” said Warwick manager Mike Fratus.

Brayden Ogden got the win on the mound for Warwick against Scituate.

“He followed the game plan, he knew what he needed to do. He gave up two early runs but settled in and pitched well. It was a nice matchup for him,” said Fratus.

Brayden Deprete led the way at the plate for Warwick in the win, hitting two doubles and driving in five runs.

“Brayden Deprete may be the hottest hitter on the planet right now. He’s raking right now,” Fratus said.

Warwick went on to face South Kingstown on Wednesday night with a trip to the finals against defending champion Upper Deck on the line. The results were not available at press time.

Playing clean defense and remaining strong on the mound will be the key to getting some revenge and well as potentially knocking off the defending champs, according to Fratus.

“We’ve got to pitch and we’ve got to play defense. We gave them extra outs and it killed us. We can’t give extra outs and we’ve got to mash on offense, we have to put up runs,” Fratus said.

The winner of Wednesday’s night game will go on to face Upper Deck in the championship on Thursday at McCarthy Field in West Warwick. Either Warwick or SK will have to beat Upper Deck twice in order to get the win.
