Thornton Elementary hosts first-ever Parent Academy

Thornton Elementary School may have raised the bar for hosting unusual and unique events.

For example, the first-ever Trick and Treat Trail held in conjunction with Halloween was a sparkling success for young and old alike.

Maria Colon – an ESL specialist for grades two and four – and others will tell you that Thornton’s recent Parent Academy Night was entertaining, educational, and exciting.

“When we sent the notices home,” Colon said, “people were asking us, what is Parent Academy?”

The Parent Academy began with pizza, chocolate chip cookies, and water in the cafeteria, where Principal Louise Denham welcomed dozens of parents and their children for the first-ever event.

The night also included an impressive Student Council induction ceremony; an opportunity to learn about the school-wide PBIS program; strategies to help students succeed in school; and participation in grade-level table talks to brainstorm ideas with teachers and other parents.

At conclusion educational event, bingo and crafts were held for school-age children.

Attendees left the Parent Academy with an information package that featured positive parent tips for healthy child development and a comprehensive list of resources and various websites where parents can look for more information.
