Stenhouse out as city’s senior services director

Sue Stenhouse has stepped down as executive director of the city’s Department of Senior Services.

On Monday, Director of Administration Robert Coupe confirmed Stenhouse’s resignation, which was submitted Jan. 8. He said the departure was Stenhouse’s “personal decision” and declined to discuss the matter further, characterizing it as a “personnel issue” on which the mayor’s office would not comment.

“We appreciate all of her work and certainly wish her the best,” he said.

Stenhouse offered the following comment by email:

“While I cannot comment at this time on the resignation from my position as Executive Director at the Cranston Senior Enrichment Center, I am proud of my role in continuing the great legacy of this agency during the past two years. It has been an honor to promote healthy aging for our residents. The dedicated staff, the community partnerships we developed and of course the opportunity to work with the engaged membership have left an indelible mark in my public service career. I sincerely wish the seniors of Cranston my very best.”

Coupe said he expects the administration will work to name an interim senior services director as soon as possible, and will then begin a search for a permanent replacement. A timeline has yet to be established, he said.

Stenhouse was chosen by Mayor Allan Fung to lead the Cranston senior center in December 2013. Several initiatives were launched during her tenure, and the center was re-branded as the Cranston Senior Enrichment Center.

A former Ward 1 City Council representative in Warwick and current Warwick Planning Board member, Stenhouse was a candidate for secretary of state in 2006 and served as a high-ranking State House aide during the administration of Gov. Donald Carcieri. She also has a range of other professional experience, including work with the Greater Providence Chamber of Commerce.

Whoever replaces Sue Stenhouse as Executive Director of Senior Services might consider the issue raised by a 67 year old man with acute leg pains turned away from that Walk In Clinic on Reservoir Ave.... because he was ONLY covered by Medicare . I was waiting in the parking lot for my friend. He was told that the doctor will NOT see him. A sign in the office said a visitor must have a valid credit card on file. I think that there is a case for ACLU here: discrimination against the MAJORITY of elderly residents in Cranston. We are long way from Senator Ted Kennedy's dream of health care as a basic human right.

My friend went to a hospital accident room.
