Restaurant Review

Something for everyone at 1149 Restaurant

Posted

Warwick’s 1149 Restaurant has been a favorite of our family for years. It has become a tradition for Mother’s Day brunch and other special occasions. The brunch, also held on Sundays, is so popular it requires reservations way in advance. The buffet tables are set up throughout the sprawling restaurant, adding to the enjoyment of stalking your food.

Also popular is their three-course Prix Fixe Dinner for $29.95, served Sunday through Thursday evenings. Appetizers include chowder or salads. We recommend Chef Jules clam and corn chowder or the Asian salad. Entrees include pork chops, braised corned beef brisket and soy glazed salmon. Chef Jules always has something special to enhance the dinners, such as a horseradish potato salad with the corned beef or a polenta cake with the 12 oz. pork chop. The prix fixe coupe de gras is the flourless chocolate torte, served with crème anglaise and Chantilly cream.

Our daughter enjoys their luncheons, which are quite inexpensive and include brick oven pizzas for $7 and $8 and a wide variety of interesting salads.

On our last visit, Joyce enjoyed a 10 oz. filet, cooked rare to her liking ($30), while I went for my favorite, rack of encrusted lamb: two large perfectly cooked chops ($28). I’ve also enjoyed the salmon and, for lunch, a great meatloaf.

1149 has an excellent selection of wines and, according to Joyce, the best Black Russian in the state. The service is elegant without being pretentious, whether ordering an under $10 sandwich or a $25 meal. Water glasses are replenished; fresh bread (try the black olive bread) is served warm.

While we usually skip desert, 1149 is the exception. They make their own, and they are delicious. I don’t even have to look at the menu because I know that I’m getting the crème brule. The ice cream is as good as it gets. Try the mint, which tastes like fresh mint.

Whether we want a quick snack after a movie at the Showcase, a pleasant family dinner, or an elegant Sunday brunch, 1149 is on our top ten list.
