Sharing the ‘Vision of the Graduate’

Johnston High School seniors recently demonstrated their culmination of learning and personal growth through the Vision of the Graduate senior presentations. The Vision of the Graduate, a comprehensive framework that guides our students’ education, sets forth five essential pillars: Effective Communication, Global Citizenship, Healthy Being, Informed Thinking and Self-Directed Learning. The presentations, a requirement for graduation, showcased how students have embodied these pillars in their academic and personal lives.

In these 10-20 minute presentations, students shared their personal journeys through high school, each one a unique testament to their growth and development. They emphasized how they embodied each pillar and its significance in their lives. Panels composed of three or four educators and community members attentively observed as students reflected on their individual accomplishments. These presentations are evaluated based on the students’ ability to articulate their experiences, their understanding of the pillars and their overall growth and development.

Effective Communicator: One of the fundamental pillars, effective communication, was exemplified as students articulated their thoughts clearly and confidently. Students showcased their ability to communicate appropriately and respectfully in diverse contexts, from group projects to digital presentations.

Global Citizen: Johnston High School prides itself on nurturing global citizens who are culturally aware and socially responsible. Seniors, with unwavering commitment, demonstrated their dedication to this pillar by sharing community engagement experiences and advocating for causes close to their hearts. They emphasized the importance of promoting respect and acceptance among individuals from diverse backgrounds.

Healthy Being: Maintaining physical, mental and social well-being is paramount at Johnston High School. Seniors discussed their efforts to achieve balance and pursue passions while respecting their bodies and minds. They highlighted the significance of resilience and self-confidence in navigating challenges.

Informed Thinker: Academic accountability and critical thinking are core values instilled in students at Johnston High School. Seniors showcased their ability to analyze and synthesize knowledge, applying it to real-world situations. They emphasized the importance of research skills and numeracy in creating authentic tasks.

Self-Directed Learner: Overcoming obstacles and striving for continuous improvement are hallmarks of a self-directed learner. Seniors reflected on their growth journey, setting and achieving goals while monitoring their progress. They emphasized the value of persistence and the pursuit of quality work.

As the presentations concluded, it was evident that Johnston High School seniors had not only met but exceeded the expectations set forth by the Vision of the Graduate. Their presentations served as a testament to their growth, resilience and readiness to embark on the next chapter of their lives. The Johnston community, deeply proud of their achievements, eagerly anticipates the impact these graduates will undoubtedly make as they venture into the world as thoughtful, engaged citizens, carrying the values and lessons they learned at Johnston High School.
