RI Historical Society to host first Archive Remix Film Festival

Posted

The Rhode Island Historical Society, in partnership with LittleFire, is pleased to present its first annual Archive Remix Film Festival. This three-night, three-location event begins Friday, Sept. 10, and will present an hour-long program of 3-minute creative remixes by local filmmakers using materials from the RIHS Moving Image and Audio Collections (MIAC).

Creators were provided with access to over 300 minutes of footage from the 20th century and tasked with creating 3-minute short films composed of at least 75 percent archival footage.

“As an archivist, there’s nothing more gratifying than seeing the materials in your care put to use,” said Becca Bender, archivist and curator of MIAC. “We’re particularly excited to see how the Remix participants extract new meaning from the RIHS film collections through creative reuse.”

All screenings will begin at 7 p.m. and will take place on Friday, Sept. 10, at the RIHS Aldrich House headquarters in Providence; Saturday, Sept. 11 at the Newport Art Museum in Newport; and Sunday, Sept. 12 at the South County Museum in Narragansett.

All events will be outdoors, weather permitting. Registration is required for alternative indoor seating in the event of inclement weather. Guests may register by visiting archiveremix.org.

Outdoor screenings will have gates open at 6:30 p.m. with guests welcome to bring coolers and refreshments. If events are moved indoors, refreshments will not be permitted. Masking requirements and COVID-protocols will be continually updated and communicated to all registrants.

This event is made possible in part with support from the Herman H. Rose Civic, Cultural and Media Access Fund at the Rhode Island Foundation.
