Red Crab Seafood Restaurant opened recently at 1800 Post Road (Airport Plaza) right on the heels of Hook & Reel, which we reviewed recently.
Both restaurants follow the same formula of seafood boil combinations.
Prices are pretty comparable. Red Crab is slightly less, but Hook & Reel offers discount coupons.
Hook & Reel has traditional Hushpuppies with cornmeal, while Red Crab offers the deep fried appetizer with corn kernels.
Hook & Fin is a bit more intimate, while Red Crab feels like a Shore Dinner Hall.
Both offer boiled and fried fish with choices of sauce and degree of spicy.
Red Crab has daily specials. Monday is a half-pound of black mussels, a half-pound of shrimp (no head) and a half-pound of snow crab ($29.99). Snow crab is part of the two or three combinations every day, with crawfish substituting for mussels on Tuesday and a lobster tail on the weekends.
Both offer corn and potato in the boil. The red potatoes are good. The corn isn’t.
We have seen little promotion for Red Crab, which chose to do a soft opening.
Our daughter loves Hook & Reel, and will probably patronize it because it is closer to her home. We are closer to Red Crab.
Red Crab hours are Sunday through Thursday from noon to 10 p.m., and Friday and Saturday to 11 p.m.
They have luncheon specials Monday through Friday from noon to 3 p.m., which include boiled shrimp, mussels and clams and fried shrimp, haddock, catfish, oysters calamari, chicken and wings for $8 to $10. They come with Cajun fries.
