The Johnston softball team earned a spot in the Division II quarterfinals with a dramatic, 6-5 victory at Portsmouth in a preliminary-round game on Tuesday afternoon.
The Panthers belted three home runs to down the previously 12-4 Patriots, none bigger than Lauren Civetti’s go-ahead, two-run blast in the top of the seventh to give Johnston the 6-5 lead.
Johnston is now in the double-elimination portion of the playoffs, and will play top-seeded North Providence at Notte Park at 4 p.m. today.
