Hawks extend win streak

By ALEX SPONSELLER The Bishop Hendricken basketball team has stayed hot, winning two more games and extending its win streak to 10 games as the regular season winds down.

The Hawks traveled to Woonsocket on Saturday and held on to get the 68-55 win.

After leading for much of the first half, Woonsocket’s shooters would get hot, including Davonte Lavallee, who sank seven 3-pointers, and take a lead late in the third quarter.

It would be all Hendricken in the fourth as the Hawks rolled to run away with the win.

Eze Wali led the way with 19 points while David Lynch added 18 and Cameron Chinn 15.

“It was encouraging in some ways but a little upsetting in others. Woonsocket came out played a great game. Our game plan involved (Woonsocket’s Shane Perrico) who is one of the elite 3-point shooters in the state, but then (Lavallee) comes out and hits seven 3’s. Any time a team can shoot the ball like that, it can make it very interesting,” said Hendricken coach Jamal Gomes. “What I liked about today’s game is that the guys stuck together and got it done when it mattered. They made the right plays to be successful.”

Wali has emerged as one of the state’s top players this season and had another impactful performance both offensively and defensively on the road.

“He’s an extremely explosive athlete and has come so far along this year in his understanding of the game. In his overall scoring, he sees the ball, gets the ball and he’s very tough to chase down. We’re proud of him. He’s been shooting the ball better. I don’t think you can find another player in the state that can get to the rack like Eze can,” Gomes said.

Also stepping up for the Hawks has been Mike Paquette, who assumed the starting point guard duties recently and has logged significant minutes. Paquette added seven points in the win.

“He came off the bench to start the season but as the season went on, we made the decision to put Eze and Azmar (Abdullah) on the wings to utilize their scoring abilities. Mike has been outstanding. He has outstanding toughness, heart, he fights hard every possession. As point guard, he has to be a leader and get the ball to where it needs to get to and he’s done that. Hopefully he continues,” said Gomes.

Hendricken turned around to host Wheeler on Monday night, who entered the game as one of the top teams in the state to this point this season.

The Hawks did not disappoint as they wrapped up a 58-46 decision. Wali and Abdullah led Hendricken with 19 points each while Lynch scored 13.

Hendricken had a showdown with Classical on Wednesday, but the results were not available at press time.
