Help Provide Thanksgiving Turkeys

Monster Mash Family Storytime

Cranston Public Library’s Auburn Branch will hold a monster mash family storytime at 2:30 p.m. on Oct. 29. There will be stories, songs and rhymes all about monsters. This family storytime is geared toward children ages two to eight and their caregivers, but all are welcome. Space is limited and registration is required. If weather permits, this storytime will begin outdoors and then participants will go indoors to make snacks. White Cane Day

Join Garden City Center for Rhode Island’s White Cane Day Celebration on Oct. 15 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the center’s gazebo.

The event is rain or shine and will celebrate the independence of Rhode Islanders who are blind and visually impaired with lots of family-friendly activities, including a free t-shirt giveaway (while supplies last), a face painter, balloon artist, food, white cane pretzels and music! There will also be a National Hot Rod Association Funny Car and resource tables featuring information about local organizations and services.

Rain Harvest Arts Festival

There will be a rain harvest arts festival at Roger Williams Park Boathouse on Oct. 15 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Celebrate water and green infrastructure with performing artist Sussy Santana, Vatic Kuumba, Providence Drum Troupe and Extraordinary Rendition Band. Environmental workshops, science demonstrations and green infrastructure tours will be available. The event is free.


Meet and Greet

Come meet the people who have been featured in the Humans of Cranston column in the Cranston Herald on Oct. 20 from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the William Hall Library (1825 Broad Street). There will be snacks and time to chat and meet other people in your community.


Virtual Cooking Class

OneCranston Health Equity Zone is hosting free, online cooking classes for Cranston families. There will be a new recipe and instructional video for each class. Free ingredients will be provided. Classes are available in English and Spanish. The upcoming event will be on Oct. 20 where individuals will make plant-based Sancocho for Hispanic Heritage month. To sign up, call/text 401-222-9222.


5K Run and Walk

Park View Middle School and Operation Stand Down Rhode Island will host its 5K run and walk on Nov. 11 at Roger Williams Park. The kids fun run is at 8 a.m. and 5K is at 9:30 a.m. Register today at Tiny.cc/pv5k2022.


Howl-o-ween Pawty

Join Garden City Center on Oct. 16 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. for a Howl-a-ween Pawty. Pups are encouraged to wear their costumes (or their favorite festive collar if costumes aren’t their thing) and hang out with your fellow neighborhood pups. Enjoy treats for humans and pups, take a pic with your pooch in the photo booth, join a Halloween parade around the gazebo and meet local adoptable pups from Heart of RI Animal Rescue. Tickets are $5 and include admission for you and as many pups as you have. All proceeds from the event benefit Heart of RI Animal Rescue.


Art Stroll

There will be an art stroll on Oct. 20 at Garden City Center celebrating the recent mural installations at the center. Sit down and chat with artists and learn more about their work. Start at Ohanga for a penal featuring alleyway artists Agonzaq, Bonnie Lee Turner & Charles C. Clear and Keri King. They will have a conversation about their experiences, inspiration and thoughts on art in the public realm. After the panel, stroll through Garden City Center Village and peek into each alleyway and meet artists on location. Light bites and non-alcoholic beverages will be served. All ticket proceeds benefit Haus of Codec.

Fall Prevention Program

Join the Cranston Senior Enrichment Center (1070 Cranston St.) on Tuesdays and Fridays from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. for a fall prevention program beginning Oct. 18 and ending Nov. 11. Many people think that falls are the normal part of aging, but the truth is, they’re not. Most falls can be prevented, and you have the power to reduce your risk of falling. AARP Driver Safety Program

Refresh Your Driving Skills on Oct. 17 from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Cranston Senior Enrichment Center (1070 Cranston St.). This safety driving course is specifically designed for seniors. Drivers may benefit from a discount on their auto insurance premium upon completing the course. (Consult your agent for details.) The class will begin promptly at 9 a.m. No late participants will be allowed in the program. The cost for AARP members is $20 and $25 for non-members. Please bring exact cash or a check. Used Book Sale

The Cranston Public Library’s used book sale returns Nov. 5 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The library is currently accepting donations of books, DVDs and CDs for the sale. Donations must be in good condition and can be dropped off at the Central and William Hall Libraries through Oct.20.

Additionally, volunteers are needed to help with the Book Sale. Please contact Robin Nyzio at rnyzio@cranstonlibrary.org if you are interested in volunteering. Proceeds from the efforts of our community volunteers go to support programs at the library.


Join Phillips’ Chime Choir

Phillips Memorial Baptists Church (565 Pontiac Ave.) is looking for children ages six to 10 who are interested in participating in a Chime Choir led by Minister of Music Martha Sobaje. The rehearsals won’t be too long and will occur at 11:15 a.m. after church on Sundays. This is an exciting and fun opportunity to learn music and a great way to meet others. A Tale of Two Books

Cranston Public Library welcomes Sandra Moyer and Janet Cullen Ragno, authors of Cranston Revisited and Cranston Through Time to Central Library on Oct. 22 at 2:30 p.m. for a photographic journey that chronicles the history of Cranston and its citizens’ lives.

Cranston Revisited features vintage photos along with captions describing how people throughout our city’s history lived, worked, traveled, worshiped, studied, played and were governed. Cranston Through Time pairs vintage photos of buildings and landmarks in the various villages that make up Cranston with modern photos of what is now located at the same sites. You’ll get a chance to test yourself on how well you know your city.

The authors will also share the challenges they faced while working on the first book and how they overcame them while writing the second book. This event is free and open to the public. Three Small Ways to Live Your Biggest Life

Cranston Public Library welcomes Wendy Z Lewis, author of Jump in the Holes and Other Small Ways to Live Your Biggest Life, to Central Library on Nov. 1 at 6:30 p.m.

Lewis will share the curious story of her blog-turned-book and discuss “Three Small Ways to Live Your Biggest Life” and read selections from her book, sign copies, and give away a free copy to one lucky attendee.

1916 Fundraiser

The 1916 Committee is raising money to erect a monument on the site of the Famine Memorial in Providence, in honor of the 10 young men who died on hunger strike in the spring of 1981. The latest fundraiser will be on Oct. 22 at Patrick’s Pub on Smith Street in Providence. The Irish Ramblers will provide music beginning at 3 p.m. There will be a “split the pot” raffle, a silent auction for the Memorial Quilt and food provided by Patrick’s Pub. The event is open to the public. There is no admission charge but donations are gratefully accepted.


Halloween Touch a Truck

The Rotary Club of Cranston will host its Halloween Touch a Truck event on Oct. 30 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Garden City Center. Come explore big trucks along with crafts, face painting, balloon animals and more. Halloween costumes are encouraged. $10 donation per family.


14th Annual SENE Film Festival

Boo and View

Join Garden City Center for a Halloween movie night on Oct. 14 from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. The movie (Monsters Inc.) will be shown at the center’s gazebo. At 4 p.m. there will be Halloween crafts, games and snacks. Around 6 p.m., the movie will start. Tickets are $5 per child and proceeds will go directly to Adoption Rhode Island. Fairy Houses Family Craft

Create whimsical fairy homes with Cranston Central Library on Oct. 15 from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. in the James T. Giles room. This program is for children in Grades Pre-K through 5. Each group will be given one house to work on together. Basic craft supplies with be provided by the library, but participants are welcome to bring special supplies from home. No Time to Fail Documentary

“No Time to Fail,” the documentary film that follows city canvassing staff from Cranston, Providence and Central Falls, and the state in the 2020 election, will be shown on Oct. 14 at 6:20 p.m. at the Avon Cinema, 260 Thayer St., Providence. There will be another 6:20 p.m. show on Oct. 15 and a 3:45 p.m. show on Oct. 16. The run time is 90 minutes.


Clouds Hill Museum Yard Sale

Clouds Hill Museum will host a yard sale on Oct. 22 from 8 a.m. to noon. There will be electronics, books, furniture, ceramics, frames, art and more. The event will occur rain or shine. The mansion is located at 4157 Post Road, Warwick.


Trunk or Treat

Veterans Day Parade

The City of Cranston will once again hold its Veterans Day Parade at 11:30 a.m. on Nov. 11. The parade will kick off in front of Legion Bowl on Park Avenue, continue past City Hall up to Heyward Street and past Rolfe Street. Holiday Ornament Arrival

The new 2022 Cranston Police Department holiday ornament has arrived. The cost is $20 and all money raised from the sale will go directly to families in need this holiday season. More information at www.cpdcares.company.site.


Winter Market

Warwick Center for the Arts will hold “The Winter Market” from Nov. 26 to Dec. 17, Wednesday through Saturday – 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 3259 Post Road., Warwick. This year’s Winter Market features handmade items from over 20 local artists and represents the varied creativity that makes Rhode Island so special. In addition to handmade jewelry, toys, cards, ornaments, pottery and accessories, the Market will also sell affordable framed paintings, prints and other wall hangings in addition to WCFA gift certificates if you prefer to give the ‘arts experience’ as a holiday gift this year. The event is free to browse, but items are for sale. Need Christmas Help?

Families residing in Coventry, Cranston, Scituate, Warwick and West Warwick in need of Christmas help may apply for assistance from Little Free Pantry in Warwick by Nov. 26. Our goal is to provide one to three items per child: value of your gifts range from $5 to $35 dollars as this is a helping hand. We do our best to help as many as we can, we do not guarantee help. The application process is simple. Please send us a message with the following information.

  1. Your Name, a picture/copy of a recent utility bill in your name (your photo ID will be required at pick up) please block out account numbers, we just need to verify address and name. We can not accept people signing up for others, your Facebook name must be similar to your real name.
  2. For each child up to age 17, Child name (first name only), age, gender and wish list or a list of likes (of mixed value max $35 per item). You must provide a list because we can not fill requests without it. Please note we will consider children over age 17 with special needs, please PM us in regards to our requirements. No requests for gift cards/tickets, as well as any video games/systems (exception would be inexpensive headphones and accessories) will be honored.
  3. List of other programs you have signed up for, or intend to sign up for.
  4. Due to dishonesty about children, we now require birth certificate at pick up, your ID must match one of the parents listed on the birth certificate. Exception for those with legal custody paperwork will be required. This for visual inspection in person only!

While we never ask for income verification and reserve the right to ask for additional information for children as you may only sign up your children that live with you full time. Our pick up location is in Warwick, near RT 37. We provide this information when pick up times are arranged. This is borrowed space afforded to us by a local business in which we are allowed to use after business hours.


Humans of Cranston Nominations

OneCranston Health Equity Zone is starting a new initiative with the Cranston Herald and local photographer Timothy McFate called Humans of Cranston; they will be interviewing Cranston residents to gain a deeper understanding of and celebrate those who live here. Those interviewed will be featured in a new column and on OCHEZ social media. Walk & Talk Wednesdays

OneCranston Health Equity Zone has started a walking group! Every Wednesday from Sept. 21 through Oct. 26, at 8:30 a.m. and 5 p.m., you can join Sal, a Community Health Worker, for four laps on Bain’s large track, or as many as you would like. Flu Shot Clinic

Cranston Public Schools’ flu shot clinic will run for October and November. This is a community clinic for ages three and up. The clinic will be held at the following places: Hope Highlands Middle School (300 Hope Road) on Oct. 12 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the gym; Hugh B. Bain Middle School (135 Gansett Ave.) on Oct. 18 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the gym; Woodridge Elementary School (401 Budlong Ave.) on Oct. 26 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the cafeteria; Western Hills Middle School (400 Phenix Ave.) Nov. 1 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the gym; Park View Middle School (256 Park View Blvd.) on Nov. 9 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the cafeteria. Open Juried Exhibit

The Warwick Center for the Arts is holding its 36th annual RI Open Juried Exhibit from Oct. 1 to Nov. 12 at 3259 Post Road, Warwick. The show consists of a variety of media and subject matter and is juried by Paula Martiesian. Martiesian has exhibited extensively around RI and is an award-winning advocate for the arts and artists. Holiday Bazaar

On Nov. 5 and Nov. 6, St. Francis Xavier Church will hold a holiday bazaar. There will be a Christmas booth, attic treasures, silent auction, hand knit items, baked goods, kids corner, raffle baskets and more. The event will take place at 81 No. Carpenter St., East Providence. The bazaar runs from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Nov. 5 and from 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Nov. 6.


Go Birding this Fall

Join the Audubon for an annual Hawk Watching trip on Oct. 22 at Napatree Point. The cost is $15 for members and $20 for non-members and is for teens and adults – advance registration is required. To register, visit www.asri.org and click on the event calendar.


Governor Sprague Mansion Arts & Crafts Faire

There will be an arts and craft faire from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Oct. 23 at the Governor Sprague Mansion (1351 Cranston St., Cranston). Stop by for unique art and fine crafts by area artisans and learn about the artists and how they became interested in the style they represent. 2022 Celebrate the Movement 5K

Special Olympics, Garden City Center and the Cranston police Department’s Office of Community Outreach will host a 5K run and walk-a-thon on Oct. 23. Register by Oct. 10 for $30 per person and you will receive a T-shirt. Sign up on or after Oct. 10 and the cost is $40 but you will not get a T-shirt. Ghost Party

Join Jared the magician and mentalist at 7 p.m. on Oct. 28 at Governor Sprague Mansion for the Cranston Historical Society’s annual Charlie the Butler Ghost Party fundraising event. Costumes are optional – no Halloween masks. Tickets are $20 for non-members and $17 for Cranston Historical Society members. Individuals can have their tarot or psychic future read by fortune tellers for a separate fee. There will be light refreshments. Craft and Vendor Show

St. Mary’s Feast Society Ladies’ Auxiliary will host its annual Holiday Craft and Vendor Show from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Nov. 12. There will be vendors, crafters, handmade items, baked goods, raffles, food and more.


EG Art Club Exhibit

The East Greenwich Art Club will have its annual exhibit of members’ artwork at the Cranston Public Library (140 Sockanosset Cross Road) from Oct. 1 to Oct. 28. Free Teacher Assistant Training Program

The Comprehensive Community Action Plan is holding a free, virtual teacher assistant training program from Oct. 17 to Oct. 27. Individuals must be 18 to 24 years old, have a high school diploma or GED and a clean BCI. The classes run from noon to 3 p.m. Individuals, if eligible, can get paid to attend class. Walk and Talk at Rocky Point

Come join the “Rocky Point Pacers” for a walk around Rocky Point every Tuesday and Thursday morning at 9 a.m., weather permitting. They meet at the gate on Rocky Point Avenue.
