Friends of the WPL Book Sale

The Friends of the Warwick Public Library will hold its bi-annual book sale this weekend (Sept. 23 – 25). The sale kicks off with the book sale preview on Sept. 23 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. for the Friends members. Non-members can join at the preview for $10. The Sale will continue on Sept. 24 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sept. 25 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

The Friends support the WPL through programs and events including museum passes, concerts, movies and summer reading programs for children, teens and adults. Find fantastic deals on over 6,000 hardcovers, paperbacks, children’s books, CDs and DVDs at the Friends Book Sale.


Warwick Municipal Retirees Meeting

Our meeting will be Sept. 28 at the Pilgrim Senior Center, 10:30 a.m., in the ceramics room. Please join us for coffee, pastry and interesting news. Our vice president has resigned. Welcome to Fall Craft Fair

Diana Gargano will host a fall craft fair from noon to 4 p.m. on Sept. 25 at 475 Sandy Lane, Warwick. There will be 28 crafters and vendors, plus a raffle table where proceeds will be donated to Crossroads Rhode Island. No entrance fee.


Cornhole Fundraiser

There will be a cornhole tournament at Cranston’s Thirsty Beaver (288 Atwood Ave., Cranston) on Sept. 25 at noon. All proceeds will be donated to the American Cancer Society. Hoops for Hope

On Sept. 24, there will be a 3-on-3 Hoops for Hope basketball tournament to benefit the NICU for premature infants at Providence Women and Infants and Hasbro Children’s Hospital at the Johnston Rec Center (1741 Atwood Ave., Johnston). There are several sponsorship packages available: the silver package ($350) will have team t-shirts with company logo, social media blast and letter of recognition from charities; the gold package ($750) will have team shirts with company logo, social media blast, letter of recognition from charities, company banner displayed at event and professional company promo video. Animal Blessing

In honor of St. Frances, St. Mark’s Episcopal Church will have its Annual Blessing of the Animals on Oct. 1 from 1 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. on the front lawn of 111 West Shore Road, Warwick. Go Birding this Fall

Join the Audubon this fall for morning bird walks. There will be a bird walk at Hunt’s Mills in East Providence on Oct. 9 from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. The cost is $5 for members and $7 for non-members and is for those ages 12 and older – advance registration is required. There will also be an annual Hawk Watching trip on Oct. 22 at Napatree Point. The cost is $15 for members and $20 for non-members and is for teens and adults – advance registration is required. October Paint-Out

Warwick’s Clouds Hill Museum in conjunction with the Warwick Center for the Arts will host a  paint-out this fall on Oct. 8 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. All artists working in any medium will fall in love with the setting. Pre-registration is required and can be completed at www.warwickcfa.org.


Flea Market

Lakewood Baptist Church will hold an indoor group flea market, bake sale and snack bar on Sept. 24 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 255 Atlantic Ave., Warwick. Items for purchase include housewares, books, jigsaw puzzles, dishes, clothing, jewelry and children’s items. The lunch menu includes meatball sandwiches and hot dogs. Bake sale items include cookies, breads, brownies, blueberry cake and more.


Fall festival at Warwick Central

Warwick Central Baptist Church across from Warwick City Hall in Apponaug will hold their fall festival Saturday, Sept. 24 starting at noon and running to 4 p.m. The free festival will feature live music, games, food and crafts including pumpkins, mask masking and face painting.  The rain date is Oct. 1.


Community Meeting with Warwick Police

There will be a community meeting with Warwick Police at 6 p.m. on Sept. 12 in City Council Chambers (3275 Post Road, Warwick). The purpose of the meeting is to discuss recent break-ins to vehicles in the community and receive updates and suggestions from police on how best to protect ourselves from this type of crime. Guys will be Dolls

The show Guys will be Dolls will be staged Saturday, Sept. 24 at the William Shields American Legion Post, 662 West Shore Rd. Dinner, provided by Rigatoni’s Family Restaurant will be served at 6 p.m. with the show at 7. Tickets are a $20 donation and will be available at the post bar. Proceeds will benefit  the  post’s children’s Christmas party fund.


EG Art Club Exhibit

The East Greenwich Art Club will have its annual exhibit of members’ artwork at the Cranston Public Library (140 Sockanosset Cross Road) from Oct. 1 to Oct. 28. The exhibit is free and open to the public. Please check the library’s website for their current hours. There will be a reception on Oct. 8, from 1:30 to 3 p.m., where you can meet the artists. Harvest Breakfast

There will be a Harvest Breakfast at Little Rhody Vasa Park, located at 10 Boswell Trail in Foster, RI (right off Rte. 6) on Oct. 1 from 8 a.m. to noon. For the pancake lover, there will be several styles of gourmet pancakes: Swedish pancakes, blueberry, Almond Joy, strawberry, banana, chocolate chip and banana/chocolate chip. Gluten-free varieties will be made available upon request! There will also serve fruit salad, sausage, scrambled eggs, orange juice, apple juice, coffee and tea. The cost of this all-you-can-eat breakfast is $12 for adults and $8 for children ages 5-12. Children under 5 are free. Pumpkins Are Coming

Get your pumpkins at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church! Pumpkins arrive on Oct. 8, and sales begin at 9 a.m. Oct. 9 and will continue through Oct. 31. Days and times are as follows: Saturday and Sundays 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Monday through Wednesday and Friday are noon to 6 p.m. Thursdays from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. The church is located at 111 West Shore Road, Warwick. Oktoberfest at Little Rhody Vasa Park

There will be an Oktoberfest at Little Rhody Vasa Park, located at 10 Boswell Trail in Foster, RI (right off Rte. 6) on Oct. 16. Dinner will be served from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. with an accordion player (Dan Mackowiak) from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. and German dancers at 2:30 p.m.! The dinner ($18 for adults and $7 for children) consists of your choice of Pork Schnitzel or Bratwurst and Knockwurst, German potato salad, Spaetzle, red cabbage, Sauerkraut, and apple cake. Poet Presentation

Nonfiction@Brown lecture series presents “Diana Khoi Nguyen, Lyrical Prose, and the Intimacy of a Sentence.” Poet and multimedia artist Diana Khoi Nguyen presents her work on Oct. 5 at 6 p.m. at Brown University, PVD (location TBA go.brown.edu/nonfiction_now). Capturing the Past Plein Air

The East Greenwich Art Club is having a Plein Air event, “Capturing the Past,” at the New England Wireless & Steam Museum (1300 Frenchtown Road, East Greenwich 02818) on Oct. 15, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. All artists are invited to spend the day painting or drawing or choose whatever medium to create a work of art. The building has historical buildings, industrial machines and communication equipment.  A $10 donation to the museum is payable on the day of the event. Bring your own lunch. Abstract Intuitive Painting

Warwick Center for the Arts will host “Abstract Intuitive Painting” on the first Thursday of October, November and December from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Individuals will learn to select colors intuitively and apply various textures and marks to a wood panel using a variety of materials to create an 11x14 abstract acrylic painting on a wood panel. Drawing the Line

Join East Greenwich Art Club at the East Greenwich Recreation Center, 1127 Frenchtown Road, East Greenwich, for its “Drawing the Line,” workshop on Sept. 24 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Local, professional artist, Mi Ok Song will be the instructor. Her drawings of the human figure and animals are done with colored pens on paper. They reflect the harmony between humans and nature in a whimsical, representational and playful manner. Using pencils, pens, charcoal, colored pens and colored pencils, on paper, you will learn how to draw a definitive, confident line to create a drawing. Song will discuss how to utilize composition, prospective, proportion and negative space. She will also discuss values, darks, lights, shadows, foreground, middle ground and background. You will also learn how to create animals, objects, portraits, self-portraits and landscapes.


Painting With Gouache

East Greenwich Art Club will hold a “Painting with Gouache” workshop at the East Greenwich Recreation Center, 1127, Frenchtown Road, East Greenwich. This two-day workshop will take place Sept. 30 from 9 a.m. to noon and on Oct. 1 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Contemporary realist, Lorena Pugh, will spend the first day instructing how to use gouache, an opaque, watercolor medium. Participants will do practice experiments to get a feel for and create a small painting. The second day will be working in the plein air park area behind the East Greenwich Recreation Center. In case of inclement weather, we will work from a still life inside the building, using black boxes. Participants may bring whatever still life items they want to paint.


RI Art Educators Exhibit

The Rhode Island Art Educators Exhibit will run from Aug. 27 to Sept. 24 at the Warwick Center for the Arts (3259 Post Road, Warwick). This second annual Rhode Island Art Educators Exhibit is an opportunity for students, colleagues, patrons, friends and family to recognize and celebrate Rhode Island’s Art Educators’ own art. Free Teacher Assistant Training Program

The Comprehensive Community Action Plan is holding a free, virtual teacher assistant training program from Oct. 17 to Oct. 27. Individuals must be 18 to 24 years old, have a high school diploma or GED and a clean BCI. The classes run from noon to 3 p.m. Individuals, if eligible, can get paid to attend class. Beer Garden at Garden City Center

Join Garden City Center at the gazebo for a rotating lineup of local breweries on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from Sept. 2 through Oct. 2. Grey Sail Brewing will be there from Sept. 16 to Sept. 18, Narragansett Beer will be there from Sept. 23 to Sept 25 and Proclamation Ale Company will be there Sept. 30 to Oct. 2. On Fridays, the beer garden will be open from 4 p.m.t o 8 p.m. On Saturdays, it will be open from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. and on Sundays it will be open from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. The beer garden is open to the public – no cover charge. Customers must show a valid ID in order to purchase an alcoholic beverage.


Library looking for podcast geeks

Are you a fan of listening to podcasts? Do you have a lot of technical skills you would like to apply to a great community resource? The library has its own weekly podcast, Warwick Radio Online, and is building a team to help run it.

Warwick Radio Online (https://warwicklibrary.org/warwick-radio-online-4) highlights the wonderful things that make Warwick great from community resources to opportunities for entertainment to the background and history of the city. They are looking for folks who would like to be technicians to operate the recording studio and edit episodes of the show, on-air talent to serve as hosts of episodes, or managers to supervise and schedule podcast episodes. Those interested can serve in one or all of these roles. Tasks could include recording content in the studio, hosting/co-hosting, interviewing, scriptwriting, editing sound, and experience with Apple computers and the GarageBand audio-editing software. Experience would be helpful, but the library can also help you learn the skills you would need to work on the podcast.

Volunteer with Westbay Community Action

Do you have a passion and desire to make a difference in your community? Westbay Community Action’s ‘Marketplace,’ the second largest food pantry in RI, needs volunteers who are interested in a fun and rewarding experience working with like-minded people. Volunteers 17 years or older will be stocking shelves, unpacking trucks and helping individuals with picking up their food. Bowlers Needed

The Warwick Men’s Church Bowling League is in need of some new bowlers. The league was established in 1951 and is still bowling duckpin at the Meadowbrook Bowling Alley in Warwick. The group bowls on Tuesday nights from September until April. A weekly fee of $15 provides three games of bowling, small events and a banquet at the end of the season with cash prizes. Caregivers

Are you caring for someone with dementia who exhibits difficult to manage behaviors? You may be eligible to participate in a research study seeking advice and feedback from caregivers about what types of supports are needed. Enrolled participants will be compensated for their time. Take Off Pounds Sensibly

Take off Pounds Sensibly (TOPS) #38 in East Greenwich has returned to having meetings every Thursday morning at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church (99 Pierce St., East Greenwich) at the lower level. The meeting will be ongoing. Weigh-in begins at 9:30 a.m. and the meeting begins at 10 a.m.

Collectable Car Show

Tri City Elks Lodge 1915 W. Shore Rd. Warwick presents a Custom Collectible Car Show on Thursdays at 5 p.m. around the back of the lodge. Bring your auto and show it off or just come and enjoy the night. There will be music and food for sale and the Tiki Bar will be open for beverages! Additionally, Tuesdays are the lodge’s Jeep Night at 5 p.m.  Jeeps and 4x4’s of all shapes and sizes are welcome. The Tiki Bar will be open; food by PB&J’s will be available to purchase.


Old Warwick Grange 41

Homecoming Celebration

St. Francis Xavier Academy Alumnae Association (SXA) announced its Homecoming celebration will be Oct. 23 with an 11 a.m. mass at St. Timothy Church, Warwick, followed immediately by lunch at the Crowne Plaza in Warwick. This year, due to prior Covid restrictions, the classes of 1970, 71 and 72 will be honored.  Scholarships are announced during lunch.  Alumnae may sponsor students for scholarships to Catholic High Schools. Hearts for Hospice

Visiting Nurse Home and Hospice (VNH&H) is asking for individuals to support their hospice programs by giving $20 or more to their Hearts for Hospice campaign. Calling All Cribbage Players

Do you play cribbage? If so, consider joining a small group of cribbage players from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. every Friday who meet and play at the East Greenwich Community Center located on Pierce Street in East Greenwich. The Rhode Island Blood Center is in need of blood. Individuals wishing to donate must book an appointment at the donation center; walk-ins are only accepted if safe distancing allows at the person’s time of arrival. Walk and Talk at Rocky Point

Come join the “Rocky Point Pacers” for a walk around Rocky Point every Tuesday and Thursday mornings at 9 a.m., weather permitting. They meet at the gate on Rocky Point Avenue.


Be Kind RI

Be Kind RI is a new program that connects volunteers to their neighbors across RI through text alerts to coordinate food deliveries from grocery stores and food pantries. To sign up go to www.BeKindRI.org. Volunteers must be 18 or older and undergo our background check. Be Kind RI is open to those in RI experiencing COVID-19 risk factors including seniors 65+, anyone with underlying health conditions, those in quarantine or isolation, anyone experiencing a lack of childcare, and those who would otherwise experience difficulty in obtaining food. Meals on Wheels in Need of Volunteers

Meals on Wheels of RI is in immediate need of volunteers for its Home-Delivered Meal Program in Warwick. Meals are delivered Monday through Friday between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. The program helps homebound seniors remain healthy, safe and happy at home. Citizenship Prep Classes at WPL

Prepare for the U.S. Naturalization Interview with Citizen Preparation classes at the Warwick Public Library. Practice citizenship vocabulary, learn the necessary civics content, and work on interview skills using the N-400 application form. We Make RI, an organization that provides free manufacturing training, is hosting a series of job fairs every Thursday from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. at their offices at 200 First Ave. in Cranston. We Make RI offer job seekers a chance to meet with employers, get career counseling, resume help and more.
