First, second and third grade students at Thornton Elementary School in Johnston erupted into applause and cheering Tuesday as philanthropist Alan Shawn Feinstein presented a $5,000 gift to their school.

The announcement came at the end of a short talk promoting his Junior Scholars Program.

Thornton is a Feinstein Good Deeds school. Each year, Feinstein encourages the children to do good deeds and be kind, helpful and respectful as part of his Junior Scholars program.

Feinstein told the children about the Feinstein schools throughout the world, but said, “There are no boys and girls and teachers anywhere that are more special to me than you and your teachers. So for all the good deeds you guys do, my Junior Scholars, give yourself a big round of applause.”

He then presented them with a new Feinstein Junior Scholar card.

“You put your name on this card and it tells everyone you’ve been officially named a Feinstein Junior Scholar, helping to make the world a better place. On the back of the card are a list of places you and your guests can go absolutely free when you show this card. You know why you can go free to all these places? Because people respect you for the good deeds you do,” he said.

Feinstein then presented each student with a new journal. Inside the journal is a list of good deeds they can do, a place to write what they have done, and a spot for their picture.

“The picture is there,” he told them, “because you are going to save this for a long, long time and are going to want to show this journal to your children someday, and they are going to want to see how you looked today.”

Louise Genham, the school’s principal, said she doesn’t yet know how the donation will be spent, but that it will be something the children can benefit from.
