Dollywood signs at the airport?

Posted

To the Editor,

Joy!  What a wise use of highway funds! We refer to the Dollywood signs and wave fences on the Airport Connector.  A mere $12,500,000 to enliven the experience of people flying into and out of T.F. Green.  Blue and white Jersey barriers make perfect complements.  A well-justified expense, some might say.

But those blaring, over-the-top signs! Good alerts for those DUI-ing or dozing off at the wheel, but did you notice that they point in the wrong direction? People coming in to Rhode Island won't see them until they come back to catch their return flights.

And do you remember the 2010 floods? Here's hoping the I-95 southbound to the airport sign is waterproof. A wetlands permit may be in order.

Rhode Islanders driving up and down I-95 will now be reminded of the waste and abuse of our taxpayer money over which, in so many instances, we have no control. Stomachs may turn somersaults day after day for the next 25 years or so until the wiring fails in the next flood and the signs blink sadly off. Perhaps RIAC should set up a sinking fund to pay for their removal when that time comes. Failing that, puzzling artifacts may await twenty-second-century archeologists to (finally) make sense of.
