Last fall the School District received a code violation for the bleachers at Pilgrim High and Veterans Memorial Middle Schools.
In place of the bleachers fans had to sit in lawn chairs at Pilgrim’s Homecoming game.
Since then the problem has been fixed. But on Tuesday Assistant Superintendent Bill McCaffrey told the School Committee the City Building Department informed the district that since modifications have been made the bleachers are now required to comply with the American Disability Act.
McCaffrey said a 59-foot ramp with two platforms is required for Vets bleachers and a 50-foot ramp with two platforms at Pilgrim is required.
“Adding the ramps would be approximately $50,000,” said McCaffrey.
But McCaffrey and the district administration is hopeful that there may be a way around forking up the $50,000 while still having bleachers next year.
McCaffrey recommended the school district request a state exemption “before we spend a significant amount of money.”
School Committee Vice Chair David Testa said that he didn’t think it was a good idea to spend $50,000 on bleachers when they may be torn down in a year and a half if two new high schools are approved by voters this November.
“I don’t think it is a wise expenditure,” said Testa.
Testa favors an appeal to the Governor’s Commission on Disabilities.
“I think we need to take action,” said Testa.
