Chris Capaldi pulls some strings with his ‘Smaller Fires’ EP

Numerous local musicians perform excellent takes on genres ranging from alternative, punk, hip hop and reggae to folk, jazz, blues and everything in between. What you don’t hear a lot around these parts is music with classical influences. Cranston-based artist Chris Capaldi put his own spin on it with the release of his “Smaller Fires” EP on June 21. While he sings lead vocals and plays guitar, he’s joined by Angela Soffe on backing vocals, Tom Swafford on violin, Gillian Gallagher on viola, Emily Baroody on cello and Kyle Kegerreis on double bass.

Local music stalwart Michael Samos handled the recording and mixing while Brandon Bankes did the mastering, and their work resulted in a fantastic production quality. While this release might not be totally orchestral, the instrumentation and arrangements definitely convey a classical vibe. It’s pleasant to the senses with the heartfelt emotion of Capaldi’s lyrics coming across in profound fashion. Each song has a lot to offer the senses without any filler being present. Overall, the “Smaller Fires” EP creates a stellar listening experience due to its genuine approach and real feeling behind the songs.

While Capaldi’s new release only has four tunes, they each have something great going on with them. “Cut Me Loose” is as good of a ballad as you’re ever going to hear while exuding emotions of heartbreak and longing. With a mix of reflecting and reminiscing, “Old Photograph” has an array of steady guitar chords with the violin and viola serving as excellent complements. I like the notes of bluegrass within “Lost in Transition” and the syncopation courtesy of the instruments is fantastic. Lastly, “The Astronomer” serves as a wonderful culmination with a blend of singer-songwriter and classical sensibilities.
