The latest phase in the 115-life of the Sawtooth Building built as part of the Apponaug Mills was given a ceremonial opening Tuesday with a ribbon cutting for AAA Northeast offices. The local office, in the southern end of the building, is but a small portion of the refurbished mill that will become home to Warwick municipal offices – the City Hall Annex – late this summer. AAA Northeast’s Executive Vice President, Stephen Manty said construction of the offices that the city will lease for 15 years is on budget. In his remarks Manty said, “The Sawtooth Building is a place of historical significance in the city of Warwick. AAA is proud to preserve this structure and complete this construction project in keeping with our environmental initiative to reduce the carbon footprint. The unusual architecture that gave the Sawtooth mill its name was designed to capture more sunlight through the windows.” He said AAA is using the sloping roofs of the building to position solar panels to power the building. “We know what the building means to all of us,” Mayor Frank Picozzi said in brief remarks. Soon after taking office and learning that AAA dropped its plan to use the building as a call center, Picozzi opened discussions to lease the space in his effort to consolidate municipal offices in vicinity of City Hall. AAA returned with a plan to not only build out the city offices but also furnish the space according to the city’s plan. The administration conducted comparative long term costs of rebuilding the former annex, which has now been demolished, concluding leasing the AAA space is remarkably less expensive.
